The 5.0 Liter SOHC 24-Valve V8 and 5 Speed Automatic (in AMG form) were put in MB C series to replace the 3.2 supercharged that we know from the SRT 6. Seems like that would be closest to a "drop in" though I do know that's loose use of the term.

Not boat anchors, in fact the aluminum block version are probably lighter than the mb stuff. Thats why my best friend has one in his porsche 914. (90 lbs over the stock porsche 4 banger, not significant)
And from what I see so far the tuning is going to be easier with the bowtie stuff than messing with the mb stuff due to support and available products out there.
