Chuck, those bowties you're considering are boat anchors even if they are obviously more powerful. How about a 5.0 Liter SOHC 24-Valve V8
and 5 Speed Automatic from an MB SL 500? or a 5.0 Liter SOHC 24-Valve V8 and 7 Speed Automatic from an MB SL 500 (2004 -2006)? 2007 and up they had 5.5 Liter DOHC 24-Valve V8 and 7 Speed Automatic though there would probably be more size issues there. The 5.0 Liter SOHC 24-Valve V8 and 5 Speed Automatic (in AMG form) were put in MB C series to replace the 3.2 supercharged that we know from the SRT 6. Seems like that would be closest to a "drop in" though I do know that's loose use of the term.

Not boat anchors, in fact the aluminum block version are probably lighter than the mb stuff. Thats why my best friend has one in his porsche 914. (90 lbs over the stock porsche 4 banger, not significant)
And from what I see so far the tuning is going to be easier with the bowtie stuff than messing with the mb stuff due to support and available products out there.

I'll get right on that. LOL, On a more serious note I did get my new laptop battery pack yesterday. This morning I flashed the injector data into the PCM. It cranks and idles better but there is a lot of tuning to be done. I'm working on installing my wideband today so I can start logging/tuning. Since I bought the basic VCM suite I am connecting the wideband output to the EGR signal.

You guys realize the. Crossfire term was first used by Chevy. Crossfire injection in a bow tie. Love it man. How about twin turbos now or whipple lol.

OK, I finally started tuning the VE maps in the ECM today. Since I didn't buy the HPTuners Pro I had to create a custom PID and Histogram to log my LM-1 wideband through the EGR position circuit. Tuning the ECM is VERY simple to do. All you have to do is: disable the MAF and a couple of other functions in the VCM Editor, flash the ECM with this file, configure the VCM Scanner to record all the parameters needed for the custom Histogram, record the data during normal driving, and use the data from the Histogram to modify the VE map in VCM editor(it's a copy and special paste function). I have to repeat the process a couple more times tomorrow to get the map as accurate as possible. After just one tuning session the actual AFR is within 3-5% of commanded AFR. Once the VE map is complete I will create another Histogram to tune the MAF freq vs flow table. Then I can start tuning WOT pulls. The only problem I have encountered is an intermittent open circuit in the cam angle sensor. I'm pretty sure it's an internally broken wire. The engine runs fine without the cam angle sensor, but can take two crank attempts before it starts. I'll fix that tonight.

Interesting article for guys that use a Ford Coyote engine for retrofitting, or other conversions. Especially the fact the FRPP's Control Pack which is an open software solution to integrate the new ecu and tcu to the car. Ford Coyote Engine Swap Guide - Hot Rod Magazine

I think I understand about 70% of that, but it sounds like you are getting much closer, so good work!

I fixed my cam position sensor issue(loose spring pin inside connector). But, after flashing a calibration to lower the idle slightly the VCM is now dead. I don't think it had anything to do with the flash because it completed successfully. No crank and it will not connect with HP Tuners or a handheld scanner. When checking all power and grounds to the VCM with a DMM I found that the switched ignition wire that I am using closes to ground when in the off position instead of an open state. I'm pretty sure this is the cause of failure. I'm going to set up a bench test for the VCM to verify but I'm also going to pick up a spare VCM for $35. Not a big deal since it's so cheap. I'm going to use the rest of my hptuners credits to purchase a year/model license so I can tune unlimited 02 Silverado VCM's. I probably won't update for another week or so, have a lot of other unrelated work to do.

I received the ECM Friday and worked on this project a little today. Bench test confirms that the 1st ECU is toast. I will open it up later and see what I can find. The new ECU tested good. I pulled the complete file from it and it is from a '01 Silverado with a 6.0. I am going to write the entire backup 5.3 file to it and start tuning from scratch.

I managed to kill the second ECU. There must be something wrong in the harness. I'm going to take it all out and test everything. I have finally decided to go full race mode on the interior too.
