If you don't want to be bothered with smart phones, tablets, or netbooks then I agree, the Ultragauge appears to be a very flexible and cost-effective solution.
It does look like it can do nearly everything my phone with Torque Pro can. The only things I see that are missing (besides a neat collection of add-ons) is the ability to link to the phone's GPS (Global Positioning System) for TSD (time-speed-distance), the ability to create log files, and to be able to either download logs to another device or to eMail them to my home.
It is amazing once you start becoming "web enabled" how many things you find that you can do.
Not sure because I haven't tried but suspect you could find a good smartphone running Android on Craigslist and then do everything I've mentioned except use it as a phone and not have any monthly fees.
I've had good luck with Samsung's, just make sure it supports an SD card.
