Default Code P0455

Hi all,

I have the code p0455. Which is

I replaced the gas cap with one from Chrylser (came in a mercedes bag) as well as the air cleaner mounting gasket to throttle body which was ripped. And it still comes back. I put a vacuum gauge on the tank side of the purge valve, and it does not pull vacuum until I rev the motor. Or if I let it sit for 5mins or so it will pull the same amount as revving, which is 20 pounds. Is that the correct operating peramiter for the purge valve? Has anyone had this before? And what did they do?

Also, after replacing the gasket and gas cap, the light came back on around half a tank after a full fill up. ALSO, my gas light blinks as well randomly. Even when half full. When the check engine light came back on, the gas light started blinking immediately.

Any recommendations on a next step? Any input is greatly appreciated, thanks!

Eric

I tried both of those, got a new gas cap from the dealer as well as a new gasket for the air cleaner box it's pushed down all the way and sealing well. I don't see amy kbvious cracked lines.

does anyone have a vacuum diagram? So I can make sure I check every single line

P0455 is back. ...along with the flashing fuel light.

It went away for a while (the check engine light) but when I scan it before I go to get it smogged, the code is still there. Has been for the past month or so. Never went away.

The gas light has been blinking every other tank of gas. I filled my tank yesterday, drove 60 miles. This morning the gas light started flashing (more than 3/4 full) and the check engine light came on as well. Scanned it and same thing - code p0455. Also the emissions status LED went from yellow (when I scanned it yesterday indicating it might pass) to red today indicating it will not pass.

Any suggestions?

Download the 2005 FSM from the collection. The section on P0455 (Large Leak) begins on page 9-482.

I just made Padget's post a bit clearer.

I don't mean to "hijack" this thread, but being an "older car" guy, I really am not familiar with electronically controlled cars and the troubleshooting thereof. (I just drive those kind of cars, lol). Anyway what instrument or device do you guys buy that will plug into the vehicle's computer and then read-out any stored "trouble codes"? Are these devices universal (will work on any car) or are they specific to a certain vehicle or a certain make? Where do you find the description/explanation for any code that you might uncover? Since I seem to be moving into newer cars, I think I'd better catch-up! (The Mercedes dealer wants $180 just to scan for codes!
A related note is that my very low-mileage Mercedes SL500 has the "check engine light" on, and has a history of it coming on and then later, going out. It runs perfect, so I just replaced the gas cap and am hoping that solves the problem. But if it doesn't, I am facing Mercedes repair shop "hell" to isolate the problem and have it repaired. I would much rather find the code myself and try to do any repairs on my own. Any help appreciated!

If you have an Android Smart phone or tablet then all you need is a
<i>mini Bluetooth dongle </i> mini Bluetooth dongle
from Amazon or ebay and Torque Pro Software (http://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.prowl.torque&hl=en) from the Google store. Less than $20.

If you do not have an Android device but have a Windows laptop or tablet then the ElmScan 5 Compact & OBDWIZ comes with a dongle but is USB tethered (need to watch your right foot if driving).

If all you have are devices from an edible fruit company then it's more expensive.

Might look at this thread.

ps dunno why it does not like the play store link.

Whoa, reading that reply and the referenced thread put me into an "electronics illiteracy" seizure! It's like reading a foreign language! My cell phone does phone calls only (well it might take pictures) and is just not up to any of the gee-whiz standards of today's "wired" masses. I am what most folks would consider the opposite of a tech-geek! I DO have a laptop, though.
Can't I just go to some store or online outlet and buy a handheld reader for these troubleshooting codes? And maybe acquire code definitions from somewhere on the web? Is that even an option these days?

Kill many birds with your stone and check out the UltraGuage.
It plugs into the OBDII port, reads and resets codes, and has beaucoup pages of displayable info guaranteed to keep your eyes off the road for long periods of time.
I've had one installed for 3 years and love it.

My only issue would be the size of the Ultraguage plug. particularly on a stick shift car. The nice thing about the Bluetooth dongle is that it is smaller than the plug cover under the dash and there are no wires.

Other than that it looks very good for what it does.

I have found that being a phone, streaming music, running Torque, connecting to my smart watch, and being a sat-nav does strain the computing capacity of my phone.

The plug is made so that the wire to the display unit comes out the side of the plug, and it is a SHORT plug, it does not extend more than 1 inch below the OBDII port.
You can mount the unit to the left of the steering wheel and hide 90% of the wire inside the dash and bring it out at the top of the interior fuse door.

Thank you. Am curious since you have one does it have other engine-related displays than the ones in the picture ? It seemed quite limited in parameters available compared to my Jeep.

Go to autozone they will read the code for you, they also have code readers to buy.

If you don't want to be bothered with smart phones, tablets, or netbooks then I agree, the Ultragauge appears to be a very flexible and cost-effective solution.

It does look like it can do nearly everything my phone with Torque Pro can. The only things I see that are missing (besides a neat collection of add-ons) is the ability to link to the phone's GPS (Global Positioning System) for TSD (time-speed-distance), the ability to create log files, and to be able to either download logs to another device or to eMail them to my home.

It is amazing once you start becoming "web enabled" how many things you find that you can do.

Not sure because I haven't tried but suspect you could find a good smartphone running Android on Craigslist and then do everything I've mentioned except use it as a phone and not have any monthly fees.

I've had good luck with Samsung's, just make sure it supports an SD card.

I find it amazing that when you become "web enabled" you find you can do things that you really never needed or wanted to do and they become a complete time waster.

I enjoy playing with my toys. For some odd reason (has happened to me several times) the toys often become quite profitable in the future. My life has always been quite synergistic.

The time waster is that it took me ten minutes to set up the computers in the Crossfire for my trip to the beach. I need to change that to a push button.

I sincerely appreciate all of the information that has been provided on this subject! It is amazing what is available out there in the electronics world these days. But per the above quote, I have not become "web enabled" for many reasons. I'm sure that I am missing out on a lot of very cool stuff, but (from my perspective) with that web involvement comes a lot of unintended "knowledge based stress"! That's really why I have tried to "unwire" myself since my retirement. My mindset says "give me a tool that will analyze existing vehicle codes for problem troubleshooting only". I really don't want or need all of that other information about how the car is working at every given moment and I don't want another "gauge" on my dash that draws my attention away from driving.
So is there a really simple version of this tool that just gives static readouts of stored codes in a maintenance setting, and gives the explanations of what those codes may mean? That is really what I am looking for. (Yes, I know that I am living in the "dark ages", lol)
