Pad retraction is caused by the seal returning to its normal shape, a matter of a thou or so.
That's what I see anyway.
You sir have an annoying habit of always being right, and in this case, you are doing it again.

The pistons were already contacting one another, as they came together when he hit the brake and the caliper came off. I simply tied the assembly to the exhaust hanger. His pedal travel was normal. He made it home fine.
