Default Re: odd gearbox problem

80,000 miles and you wonder if you should have fluid and filter changed?

My personal rule, based on a remark made by a friend who owned a transmission shop before he retired and died: "If you change fluid and filter every 50,000 miles, you can almost put me out of business".
He insisted that the auto transmission (a horrible invention if you ask me, Id rather replace my convertible top every five years than deal with an auto transmission shop) can outlast ANY vehicle it is installed in with periodic fluid and filter changes.

That is the first thing I'd do. Given the average owner never services the transmission, I think it's a safe bet that the car is running with original fluid and filter.
This will be a good time to confirm if any leaks are noticeable, altho I'd bet you would have already detected that.

It will be interesting to see what it's like after a fluid/filter change. I hope you didn't buy a car someone gave up on.
