Default odd gearbox problem

Hi everyone,

im new to this forum and this is my first post so go easy on me, i bought a crossfire today!! really happy with it!

Its a 2003 auto 3.2 with 80,000 miles coupe.

so i was driving it for around 30 minuets and stopped and changed the button next to the gear stick from W to S and then set off again, all was fine until i got on the duel carriage way and put my foot down to see what it was capable of, i got to 70MPH and took my foot of the accelerator, there was a big loud thud and the car felt like i slammed the break on for a second, when i pressed the accelerator again the car just revved up like it was in neutral but it was in drive, so i pulled over, put it into neutral, put the button from S back to W, put it back into drive and it was back to normal, i drove for another 20 odd minuets with no problems, should i be worried and has anyone else experienced this? also any help or information would go along way. thanks

This one will pop up for one of three basic reasons, listed in order of likelihood:
1. Transmission fluid level is low
2. Tire size is not factory
3. Rear end gear ratio has been changed, and whoever did it, did not have the TCU reprogrammed to match

is the car still okay to drive or will this cause more problems? i think it will be the fluid level is low but these cars dont have dipsticks and the code detected says pending, think its worth paying out to get the fluid changed? thanks

80,000 miles and you wonder if you should have fluid and filter changed?

My personal rule, based on a remark made by a friend who owned a transmission shop before he retired and died: "If you change fluid and filter every 50,000 miles, you can almost put me out of business".
He insisted that the auto transmission (a horrible invention if you ask me, Id rather replace my convertible top every five years than deal with an auto transmission shop) can outlast ANY vehicle it is installed in with periodic fluid and filter changes.

That is the first thing I'd do. Given the average owner never services the transmission, I think it's a safe bet that the car is running with original fluid and filter.
This will be a good time to confirm if any leaks are noticeable, altho I'd bet you would have already detected that.

It will be interesting to see what it's like after a fluid/filter change. I hope you didn't buy a car someone gave up on.
