You simply connect your test kit , turn key to "ON", and observe the pressure. After a few seconds, the pump stops (if the engine does not start) and the pressure will bleed off.

Super easy. Or, you can guess and ask on a zillion forums, where everyone will give you their guess (most who post on these tech help threads do not actually work on their own cars, they only pretend to know, keep that in mind).

I like the OTC kits, I have the 5630 I linked to, it diagnosed my Ranger's bad pump in just a few minutes.
