As Rob says, need to check the fluid. The transmission has a mechanical linkage for reverse, neutral, and drive. The transmission uses a computer to switch gears. It takes information from the transmission to know the positions of the various valves and solenoids inside the transmission. The computer for the transmission sits inside a compartment under the glove box. It will not switch gears in drive if you have a bad conductor plate. The conductor plate is the wiring harness that connects the transmission internal sensors and solenoids.

Also you are not going to get a code from the transmission. If you have a good scanner that can talk to the transmission computer, what you can see is the position of the gear shift lever (ask) and the position of the mechanical position in the transmission.
