HELP-Buying SRT6-What problems to look for?
Hi all!
I'm going to look at a 2005 SRT6 with 25,000 miles tomorrow. What should I look at when buying this car? What are some common problems I should look for? I did some research and found a few:
-Seat heaters
-Check for rust @ bottom of doors(remove weather strip)
-Check for engine and tranny leaks
-Foggy headlights
I have read a few post of water getting into the trunk and this has me WORRIED! Where are those "rubber plugs on the bottom of the trunkwells located so I can check if there is any water in the trunk?
Any help will be much appreciated! THANKS!!

welcome to the club!!! So, I bought my SRT6 Roadster 3 1/2 weeks ago. You will L O V E this car. Ok - what I've found so far:
No problem with trunk leakage - spoiler mount shows no evidence whatsoever of leakage. Whew!
The Intercooler Pump is bad and I've bought the new "010" Bosch direct replacement pump from
Mercedes Auxiliary Water Pump - Bosch (OEM) 0392022010 | FCP Euro
The car came without a second key fob - make sure you ask for one or get a price cut because they will cost $155 from Needswings.com
(ask me how I know ;-)
Check to see if it comes with the matching luggage - you might get lucky - otherwise, search "luggage" on here and you can - like me - become the proud owner of original vintage yet brand new matched luggage that FITS the roadster with the top down - I know - I checked w/my own eyes
Check to see if there's curb rash on your wheels - especially the fronts. If so, you should ensure that the wheel bearings, steering stabilizer, tie rods and steering box are not loose, damaged or in the case of the steering stabilizer (aka damper) weak/leaking. I got my car with a few of these problems and negotiated the price down by $1,500 to cover these costs. It needed a new stabilizer and wheel bearing adjustment.
You can find your choice of stabilizers here:
Mercedes-Benz SLK32 AMG Parts | FCP Euro
If the wheels are curb rashed, you are looking at $130 per wheel to get them restored.
Make sure that you have significant tread on the tires because they are around $1,000 for a full set. Mine had 80% of the tread left.
Find out if you can if it has been modified. Typical mods are wider tires, supercharger pulleys (non-stock), modified code in ECU or TCU. You could perhaps reach out to Eurocharged.com and see if the vin is in their database. These mods all together are about $1,400 so if done by Eurocharged they are a very good thing.
The last thing I found was a leak in the driver's side oil cover breather which is often mistaken for a leaking valve cover. Have the dealer remove the air cleaner cover (it just pops off) and then do a tactile inspection :-)
Also, check to see if there is condensation on the inside of the headlights - make sure that the headlight covers have been polished. If after being polished there is still a haze, then you may have some leakage/fogging inside the headlight assembly - if it's there, you'll have to decide if you can live with it. I have a little bit of this but it's hardly noticeable so I'm totally ok with it.
If it's a roadster, make sure that the rear window is solidly attached to the top.
All the above is what I've run into (except the last one - whew). Of course you'll need to check it for repainting, and accidents etc - as you would in any car.
Hope that helps!

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
I will definatelly check all the things you mentioned. Also, how would I know if the Intercooler Pump is bad? I read some things that the supercharger would disengage because of over heating and the car would loose power and that I should drive the car for at least 30min. How else could I check?
Thanks for your detailed response!

here's how I discovered it. The necksnapping acceleration turns to normal car acceleration. You wonder what happened to your monster under the hood. So, one minute you're driving Superman, the next Clark Kent. Then Superman...then ...ummm...hello? Where'd you go?
Alternatively, you could announce your superior knowledge regarding this vehicle and make it part of your contract that if this problem shows up in the first 30 days, it's on them. If you're a good negotiator, and they need to sell - you're golden.

You are AWESOME! It's a private buyer and I will look into everything you mentioned and if I'm 100% sure I want to buy it, I will take it to a Mercedes independent shop and let them inspect the car(~$89 is well worth it as I can't see much underneath the car). Hopefully I come home with this beauty

You could also check to see if there's a Eurocharged affiliate in your area - they'd be a good choice to take a look at your intended and could even put it on a dyno (for a fee).
Check the back side of the interior door pulls. Some of the edges have become sharp and could actually cut your hand. The replacement parts are over $100 each. Search the forum for less expensive fixes that members have done.
Good luck with the buy. They are really special and fairly rare at 2016 coupes built world wide.

Thanks Bigkid, will definitely check the door pulls.
Also, I'm very familiar with those forums(not the SLK forum tho) as I owned a Mercedes C320. I always wanted a C32 AMG (mostly the engine part), but there is none available at a good price/deal/low miles so that is why im looking at the SRT6. Also, I personalty know the owners of Eurocharged. They had a shop by me (Plainfield, IL) and 2yrs ago they moved to Texas as business is much better there. But, I'm already set on buying some goodies from Eurocharged

Thanks ALL for your help!!
Not buying this car as it wasn't taken care off. It's leaking all over( valve covers and somewhere where the engine meets the tranny, not the usual plug or tranny gasket as that was changed). There is a pretty big oil stain on the garage floor and new oil was seen on the floor as well. He didn't maintain the car at all so I don't want to get stuck with a money bit.
But, there is another SRT6 with 20K miles and the owner claims it is a 3rd car off the line and that it is not governed, has no limiter and it has a code3 supercharger pulley and cold air intake and it has an 8yr-80K miles(car was bought in 2008). He wants $17.5. Is it worth that much? I think its worth $15K and I interpret the extra stuff as it was mostly likely abused from time to time and its the oldest SRT6 in the country/world
Am I wrong?

wow, VIN# 25366 is the 1st car for the retail market per the database.

As a collectible, I assume there's some value if you keep the mileage low. If I was in the market, $17.5k doesn't sound unreasonable to me.
The carfax says he's owned it since 2007 and it came with 5,700 miles, so he hasn't driven it that much. The mods and warranty alone are worth at least $2k. I'm suprised he didn't have photos of the engine in his ad. I guess it depends on car's condition and your preference.
