Default MT6 seems locked out of 1st-2nd gear

Roadster with 48k. It has always been "notchy" in the first-second shift. Have to go into second before first when stopped. Replaced the tranny fluid last year with no improvement. Never raced nor pounded; most miles are highway.

Last week after driving a few miles, it would not go into 1st or 2nd. Clutch feels normal. I can shift smoothly into 3rd-6th. No matter how much I push the stick to the left, it ends up in 3rd. Obviously I could try brute strength, but I don't want to break anything (more). It is starting in 3rd (lugging badly), but then upshifts and downshifts smoothly from 3-6 and 6-3. Even a very slow roll does not produce 1st or 2nd gear. I'm suspecting a linkage problem but not sure what to look for.

I'm going to take it to the indie shop on Friday but before I start shelling out the benjamins I want to give the forum a chance. You guys are good diagnosticians and make great suggestions.

Does it get all the way over to reverse?

Great question - I just went out and tried it (I never had to back up last week). The shift lifts and goes rearward like normal, but the car only goes forward. I cannot determine the gear, but in the small garage space I have to work with it feels like 2nd based on sound (i.e., not lugging).

My driveway slopes downhill so I can roll it out (with some help), but I want to avoid starting in 3rd to go back up the driveway. If this little trick gets it into 2nd, it could help. But it does not explain what happened to 1st and reverse. (!?!)

I'd say the linkage mechanism has come unadjusted.

Go to this page; 'MANUAL - SERVICE INFORMATION 21 - 38' in the 2004 Service Manual. It describes the adjustment procedure.

I agree it sounds like the linkage.

I have the owner's manual but no Service Manual. The owner's gives me addresses from which to order service manuals. Can anyone help a fellow owner out with a scan of the pages covering the manual transmission adjustment? My email is jjaiven@chartermi.net . Thanks in advance!!

You have been here since 2005 and do not know where to find the Service Manual? Shame on you.
Click here. This will show you the post with all sorts of manuals in it. Click on the 2005 Manual for Roadster, LTD and SRT service and repair details.

Mea culpa. I downloaded it in 2010 and forgot about it. I don't do much DIY on the car. Also, I am over 60 and probably senile. Please ignore the request. :-)

Scanned through 300+ pages of transmission mumbo-jumbo to find the manual tranny stuff. I did check for DTCs - there are none, as I expected. It looks like the adjustment calls for a Special Tool 9120 which I, of course, do not have. So it goes to the indie foreign car shop on Friday.

Per the repair order - "Inspected and found shifter cable loose at transmission. Re-attached and still would not shift properly. Test drove multiple times and made adjustments needed. Would need factory special tool for any further adjustment. Secured shift cable (with zip-tie) to prevent from loosening again." They charged me two hours labor, $175. I know they had it up/down on the lift at least two and maybe three times and it took two guys.

I only drove it 5 miles home, but it seems to shift easier between 1st and 2nd than I remember. Or maybe it is wishful thinking. But the good news it was nothing serious and relatively cheap (compare to my usual Audi A6 and A4 bills) to fix.

I drove her around this weekend and can report she is definitely shifting better than before. The notchiness into 2nd is almost gone and she goes into 1st easily. Two years ago I had the tranny fluid changed hoping that would help, and it did not. I did provide the service manual to my indie shop and they adjusted it as best they could w/o the special tool. So if you are experiencing the crappy 1-2 shift, see about having a good shop adjust the shift linkage.
