Default Hole in Firewall

So - I've removed the windshield wipers, removed the grille, and removed the fried alarm siren.

I'm taking this opportunity (while waiting delivery of my new siren) to clean up the firewall and remove any sticks, dead leaves, etc. that may have lodged in the drain holes.

There is a hole in the firewall leading into the fan motor for the climate control. It looks to me that there should be some kind of filter in that hole to keep leaves, twigs, and/or small animals from getting into the fan motor blades.

I can't find any thing in the service manual or owners manual that mentions a filter or guard there.
I didn't buy the car new, and I don't know if it had a filter that got "lost". Is this condition normal?

Thanks in advance.

Normal. Lots of owners put a screen mesh over the hole to stop debris from falling into their blower motors. A search will show some ideas.

I need to cover mine.

Thank you.
Now that I know it's normal, I will make some kind of filter.
Thanks
Pete
