Default How should trunk shocks perform on our cars

Quick question.

When I open my trunk I have to open the trunk all the way to the top by hand and then the trunk stays open. When I close the trunk, the shocks do absolutely nothing meaning, when I let go of the hatch half way, it just falls down and slams into it's lock and then it's shut. But shouldn't it kind of slowly drop and then fall into it's lock?
When people are not used to letting go softly and slam it shut, I feel like the lock will break any second. Wonder what everyone thinks!

I don't think - I lower the trunk to within 4-5" of the deck and then release it for a gentle closure. SRT6s are extra heavy due to the wing. I find no matter what the car (and I have Audis and Crossfires), if you are gentle with closing hoods/doors/trunks and switchgear, everything lasts longer and works better. You will find the same issue with the hood shock. It is there to keep the hood open and not to gently, automatically lower it. It's nicer than one of those stupid support rods that you have to swing into place on cheaper cars, like my wife's Mercury Milan.

They all will wear out sooner or later. The SRT's do have the heavy spoiler, so it will take its toll over time. Just another wear item.

I'm just honestly wondering if mine are actually fine or worn out. I need to find another Crossfire to see how their trunk shocks function.
I guess mine is like everyone's, I usually lower it to around 5" and then let it slap down and in place by itself. Seems to do the trick. I just wasn't sure if it should actually lower slowly from any position. The shocks do however keep the trunk open without a problem!

It sounds as though one might be getting weak. When that occurs, it is best to replace them both.

$18.95 each from rockauto :
2005 CHRYSLER CROSSFIRE Lift Support

( and it's a no-brainer to switch them out, about a 5 minute job )

Awesome. Just looked it up in the Service manual, seems very simple. Ordered two!

They do NOT gently lower the trunk. I procured my SRT6 with 8500 miles so it was pretty low usage, and they only keep the trunk open. Same for the 2007 coupe that I bought for my son about 5 years ago. As long as they hold the trunk open and it takes gentle pressure to start closing it, then they are fine. Save your money.

Just a quick update folks.
I bought new struts and installed them today...and I have to say WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!! Now the trunk opens itself when you just push it up a little and closes a lot softer and quieter than before. I would say my old shocks were all the way through and ready for replacement!
Thanks for posting the part! Been opening and closing the trunk at least 15 times with a smile on my face! LOL
