I bought a new GMC truck in 1993 with a 4.3L V6 in it. THAT was an ENGINE. In march of 2014, on my birthday, the second owner sent me a photo of the odometer - 406,000 miles.

Just after the photo, it got it's first clutch, when a bolt broke off in there. The A/C, radio and one power window didnt work. He had replaced the distributor, two radiators, plugs, a heater core, wiper motor, ball joints, u-joints, brakes, alternator and water pump - but the engine internals were original. It is on the road today, but is so rusted that he no longer drives it 31 miles to work every day.

It was a good engine, trouble was the cylinder head gaskets on the early ones failed and coolant mixed with the oil, not good. It was a smooth and powerful engine. In the States they were fixed under warranty but as usual Canadians were left out of it. That was and will be the last GM auto I will buy, I have since given up on Chrysler. I gave up on Ford before the GM purchases.

Fieros originally held only three quarts but Americans usually run two quarts low and engines failed. rod went through the forward side of the block, oil sprayed on the catalytic converter, and car went up in toxic smoke.

GM responded with a bigger oil filter, remarked dipstick, a shield over the CC, and a sticker on the hood.

When racing I always ran a quart over full to account for the oil in the rockers. Isn't too full until starts dragging on the crank & gets whipped into foam (can see on dipstick).
