Default VIN question

Why do Crossfire VINs begin with a "1" instead of a "W"?

It's pretty easy to look up the meaning behind a VIN on the internet. The first position is explained thus: The first character in a VIN may be either a letter or number and tells you the geographic area of origin. This is where the car was actually made.
  • A – H means Africa
  • J – R (except O and Q) means Asia
  • S – Z means Europe (W is used for Germany)
  • 1 – 5 means North America
  • 6 or 7 means New Zealand or Australia
  • 8 or 9 is for South America

So whereas in general cars manufactured in Germany are assigned a VIN beginning with the letter 'W' it is not surprisingly, more complicated. There is also something called WMI (World Manufacturer Identifier). It's the first three (3) digits of the VIN. 1C3, the beginning of all Crossfire VINs, is a WMI assigned to Chrysler. Chrysler has many WMIs assigned to it. As fate would have it 1C3 only proves a car is a Chrysler but has no meaning beyond that. Go over here and search 'Chrysler'. https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Vehicl...entifier_(WMI) There are about 8 or 9 WMIs assigned to it if you also include DaimlerChrysler. Funny enough the Chrysler TC by Maserati, although a Chrysler, has a VIN which begins with a 'Z' as properly befits any car made in Italy, even though that's not part of any WMI assigned to Chrysler. What do I have to say about that? Life don't make no sense, man!

Attached are VIN Decodings from 2004 & 2005 Crossfire Service Manuals. Later model years had even some additional decodings for the VIN.

The core point is that a VIN only encodes basic vehicle identifiers (like model, year, engine, plant, and restraint/engine codes) — it doesn’t contain a full list of every factory option in a readable way. That’s why simply running your Porsche VIN Report through generic decoders won’t show all the installed features. The complete option list lives in the car’s build data, which is best accessed by checking the factory option sticker/build sheet inside the vehicle or by requesting the original build sheet/window sticker from a dealer using the VIN, as that gives you the full equipment list directly from the manufacturer.
