Re: time to replace fuel filter?
Phil,, first the fuel filter a combination of fuel filter and fuel regulator, so make sure you get the right one Needswings.com iif your car shuts off after start , you may have a filter slightly clogging up or a vapor lock, not a reason to change the fllter , but if it shuts down and will not start for 5 min. or so ,,,RCM or could be fuel filter,( let the car sit for at an hour then turn on the key while llistening for the fuel pump if u do not here the pump it coukd be the pump or a clogged fuel filter) you will find most fuel filter/regulator will last 3 to 400,000 miles. some people just replace it just as a routine maintenance. as for me i removed mine replaced it with a manual adjustable regulator and a good high flow filter.. jim
Re: time to replace fuel filter?
i read somewhere that you need to learn what is the fuel pressure to determine if is necessary to replace the filter.
also found this thread, where they are discussing something about the pressure, but is too sophisticated for me, and i wonder if the pressures mentioned on the posts 1 and 2 are what we need.
i hope some1 could bring light on it.

Re: time to replace fuel filter?
also found this at the manual: https://zinref.ru/avtomobili/Chrysle...nglish/680.htm
it says that:
7. Pressure should not fall below 2.5 bar (36 psi) after 30 minutes.
8. If pressure falls below 2.5 bar (36 psi) within 30 minutes, it must be determined if a fuel injector, the check valve
within the fuel pump, or a fuel tube/line is leaking

Re: time to replace fuel filter?
Phil , go ahead and change your fuel filter,, I think you want to. if you have a problem call me. ,,if you want to check your fuel pressure under the hood on the fuel rail their is a black cap looke like a valve cap ( it is a valve cap) a auto parts place will have the hose and guage. you should at iddle be around 58psi
Re: time to replace fuel filter?
thank you for the input. pics?
ill try to learn where to connect the pressure gauge following your instructions.
but is not that i want to. if i dont have to i wont.
am trying to learn if it is necessary to do so, and that seems by learning the pressure.
thanks again.

Re: time to replace fuel filter?
i found this. seems that can do the job.
Re: time to replace fuel filter?
That wont work. It says "tests pressure to 10 PSI"
We have 50-55 PSI.
This one should work :

Re: time to replace fuel filter?
ordered the pressure tester but in the meantime just replaced the fuel filter. car has 67,000miles. i got it 1 year ago. at the time i changed oil/filter and transmission. synthetic.
i changed fuel filter just because i didnt know if previous owners have done that. and maintenance schedule tells every 60,000 miles.
am glad i did. all around was rusted; when emptied it, gas flowed very dark.
and when i drove it runs so smooth.... frankly, i didnt expect any detectable change.
will open the old and see how it looks, but expect lots or dirt.
didnt know how important replacing it is.

Re: time to replace fuel filter?
how was inside:
cut open the old filter, spread the accordion-like paper and let it dry under the sun. strong smell. 1 side was considerably darker than the other.
stretched it with my bare hands and washed them, but was not able to get rid of the stench. washed several times but still the stench lasted until next day.
i guess some powerful ingredients in the gas were collecting there for a long time. gas coming out of the pump at the gas station does not smell even close to that.
found this about when to replace it:
" Sources online estimate filters should be replaced as soon as every 20,000 up to 40,000 miles or more. “If none is specified [in the owner's manual], replace it every one to two years depending on miles driven,” Kreitzer says. “Thirty thousand miles is a good idea for a ballpark interval.”
and replacing it made the engine run smoother, so it confirms the convenience of removing it earlier.
the screw that tightens the 8 figure clamp that holds together the pump and the filter was rusted and made things difficult. the clamp was rusted too, and the inner side of the cover had a good amount of leaves and dirt. maybe it was not as tight as should be. but the pump and the filter were clean, perhaps because are made of aluminum.
i think it is convenient, as preventive maintenance, to open it now and then and check for dust/dirt.
the bad thing of buying a xf with over 60,000 miles is that there are many things that should be done way before, and you have no idea what previous owners had done.
the good thing for me, is that i like to work on my car, to do as much as possible instead of taking it a mechanic. about the changes of oils and the like, i prefer to do it myself because am sure that the right material was used. when leave it to a garage you cant be sure if they did it right. we see so many reports of mismanaging that is scaring.
anyway, this is it. thank you for following me in this adventure. and i like this car more everyday.
