Default I pod with a stock radio

OK has anyone figured this one out? I know they have those FM trasmitter interrupter deals, but I had one of those before and I did not have much luck with ever getting it to work with any quality of sound. I see some of you went to the Clarion unit. I like that, but for now i need a quick fix. Until i can get that Clarion head unit.

Do you have a navigation unit? Even then it's definitely one of the biggest pain in the asses nearly impossible thing you could ever do, and when you do get it working it still sucks.

If you have non-nav unit, it is not possible.

Get a new headunit either way.

Most asked question: "I pod with a stock radio?"

Most given response: "No. Not with Non-Nav stock radio. Other than FM Modulation (direct or wireless) which gives (in most peoples opinion) poor music sound quality, there is no cost-effective solution."

Sorry, but you're going to be stuck buying a new head unit if you want AUX in.

Blaupunkt and some Clarion's have, for the most part, the same connections as the factory head unit. This makes the installations very, very easy.

Check Crutchfield.com. FYI: Their warnings about rewiring the speakers are mostly wrong.

I've just received a Blaupunkt MP56. I'll take plenty of pictures during my install. I forgot to order a Europe DIN removal tool, so it's going to be another 5-7 days before I install the head unit.

Wal*Mart has the tool in the automotive sound section on the wall with all the Schosche stuff - connectors, wire kits, etc.

Strange, I did get my iPod to work, but as stated, not necessarily a cost effective solution. I installed a compatible 6 disc CD Changer under the cargo area cover on the passenger side (normally reserved for first aid kit in europe) and then got a Becker iPod adapter kit. Some creative wiring and the NAV head unit thinks the CD changer is running, and the inputs are getting audio from the iPod. All of this was done for under $450. I did get a used CD Changer. And getting the Becker iPod kit required me to order it from a european site.

This is the original thread with my original posts on the subject.

That being said, there are some down sides to this setup.

1. I can't see what is playing on the head unit's display.
2. I have to control the iPod from the iPod itself.
3. The volume of the iPod music is a bit muted compared to the radio.

Other than that, I could not be happier. Some day I will change out the head unit, but currently my budget does not allow it.

Amazing. Absolutely amazing.

It IS possible to make an aux cable for the stock head unit, but over five years with tens of thousands of Crossfire owners, no one has figured out how to make this cable.

I wish I had to money to invest in buying a CD changer and hooking all of this up, myself.

yes it can be piped in thru the cars Amp, if you have the Limited crossfire, or you can feed sound thru the TP port but eveything is in mono. and on TP mode it's either left of right speaker so your better off feeding thru the Amp on the Infinity HU

Only srt6 with NAV has aux port for Ipod only follow timelords directions. probaly cheaper to buy a new radio.

I found this and a great number of other threads in the MB, Porsche and BMW forums that led me to the same solution as MMZ_TimeLord.

But in doing the math, I came to the conclusion that for me it was not the cheapest or in the end most satisfactory solution.

Without wishing to take anything away from MMZ_TimeLord, for me it would have meant getting the NAV unit (at a cost of about what I paid for my aftermarket head unit), the CD-Changer (for about the cost of what I paid for my iPod interface, XM Radio component, HD Radio component, USB component, powered sub, and extra speakers. I already had a killer hand-held GPS so the NAV capabilities didn't offer anything.

In the end it may be possible but from a cost standpoint, and from a feature and benefit standpoint, for me, not already having the NAV unit, it was a no-brainer.

I did try the Drive + Play. And it is a decent unit - but with a head unit that HAS an AUX input. It's now in my other vehicle where it puts iPod through my stereo and charges my iPod, and enables me to share the AUX with my cheapy little XM radio. And the display and controls keeps me out of trouble with operating it while moving.

There's lots of ways to skin a cat - MMZ_TimeLord found a way to get the iPod through the NAV unit. Would love to see the wiring diagram.

I am not an electronics guy but the following info may be useful to someone who is. From the Crossfire repair manual, I see that there are basically four wires that connect the "radio" and the power amplifier. They are YL (yellow?) coming out of terminal #3, YL/VT(yellow/violet?) out of #4, BL(black?) out of #5, and BL/BR(black/brown?) out of #6. I would assume these are all connected by a single plug which is labeled "B". Each of these wires split and connect to two terminals each in the amp. To me these look like they are the stereo inputs to the amp. Couldn't a simple stereo input jack be wired into these four wires in parallel to the head unit. I realize you would not get the benefit of the pre-amp in the head unit, but an iPod does have enough power to drive some headphones pretty well without any additional amplification. I realize this a pretty simple set up but at least it might give you access to your music in the car.

Does anyone know if this would work? Like I said, I am not an electronics guy so let's make sure someone who is gives this a thumbs up before anyone tries it. Would hate to have anyone fry their equipment.

Save yourself the frustration, get a different head unit. The minute you can play your I-pod in your car it will put an instant smile on your face.

Here is the wiring diagram that I have. It is for the installation of the MPSS (source selection device). Basically what I did initially was the same as the diagram with the MPSS removed and the CD-Changer audio simply disconnected (pins 18, 19 and 20).

Short instructions:

1. Cut off and discard the blue portion of the plug from the CD-Changer
2. Cut off and discard the green portion of the plug from the iPod adapter.
3. Connect the green wire from the iPod connector to pin 9 (black wire on the green plug from the CD-Changer cable)
4. Connect the gray wire from the iPod connector to pin 8 (thicker red wire on the green plug from the CD-Changer cable).

Now you have your 'cheater' iPod cable.

Cheers!

you can get the removal tool at Wal-Mart. It's the Chrysler tool I believe. It comes in a set with Ford an GM tools. It is wide and flat. The end will be straight on one side. Half round on the other. Like a scalpel.

Couldn't agree more with that. Get a good modern head unit, too, and the sound is a huge improvement over stock...which pretty much sucks IMO.

These are the tools you need to remove the stock Becker HUs. It comes in a Ford, VW package at WalMart that includes these keys, plus another set of keys that look like thin tuning forks.
