I guess you could run an iPod cable there, too? Or , if you have the cubby hole replacement for the cup holder, you could drill a hole in it, and have an iPod holder.
I ran mine through the glove box. I noted this is not the way you want too go but below are a couple of pictures just to give you a visual.
I dont have my car here at the moment but I was able to run the cable into the glove box without cutting anything. If you pull out the radio and drop down the glove box, you can feel (cant see it) a opening between the panels to run the cable between all the way in the back near the bulkhead.
Drop it down the side center panel...in the passenger compartment to the left just above the net and this side of the net is a plastic "crease" You can create a hole here that cannot be seen and you can then keep the USB in the net.

You can run the cable without drilling holes in many spots. Most notably where the two console pieces overlap (the thick plastic ones.. hard to describe) you acn lift your hand up and feel, you can route a wire in between those to the back of the headunit..
Your description was better than mine. That is where I run my USB, but I opened it up a little so as not to rub/pinch the cable while the car was in motion. I thought maybe it would do damage over time, but we are talking the same spot.
