Engine, Exhaust, Transmission and DifferentialPost questions here that have to do with the engine, cooling system, air intake, exhaust, Transmission and Differential
Just wanted to post up a little trick to help get you through the pain and anguish of changing engine mounts. You should read up on the entire procedure, to be familiar with the task. The worst part of the job is getting the top bolts out of the mounts. It's horrible. It can take you hours and many four letter words. *Unless* there is an easier way. Fortunately, there is. You will need:
1. 3/8" ratchet
2. at least a 30" 3/8" drive extension
3. Qty 2 3/8" drive universal joints Note: very helpful is one of them is an impact type, due to how it moves)
4. Shallow 16mm socket
Procedure here will be abbreviated, as it is assumed you have read all the how-to's, looked at manuals, videos, etc. I am just cutting to the chase:
1. Get your Crossfire or SLK32/320 up in the air, and get the belly pan off.
2. Remove the two 13mm bolts from the underside of the engine mounts
3. Using a block of wood, position a floor jack under the oil pan
4. Raise the engine about as high as it will go, without lifting the car off of the jack stands. This should be in the range of 3-5"
5. Use the setup below, and use the pictures as a guide to remove the engine mount top bolts
6. Get the mounts and the shields out of the car
7. Clean the shields, and then place the new mounts in the car. Very helpful to have a second set of hands here to help position the mounts
8. Use the setup in Step 5 to put the upper bolts back in (somewhat tricky to get them started, but with the engine up, you should be able to get a hand in there)
9. Lower the engine carefully, and replace the lower mount bolts
10. Replace belly pan and lower car to the ground (unless also replacing trans mount - recommended)
11. Enjoy!
Yes, you put the extension through the gap between the head and the exhaust manifold. You put the u-joints and socket on AFTER you get the extension through that gap. You will have to maintain just the right angle to keep it all together, on the bolt, and in a position to where it will turn with the double joint. A bit tricky at first, but once you figure it out, you'll pat yourself on the back for saving hours of frustration at trying to get those bolts out with a wrench!
FWIW, I have done this on multiple Crossfires, now, both N/A and SRT6, which are identical in this regard.
