Sub location question
I pondered this tonight when I was at Best Buy looking at some speakers and HUs. I've also thought about this for my other car as well ('72 Porsche 914) and was wondering how feasible it is to custom mount a 8" or 10" sub between the seats. I've head someone mention that the gas tank is in or around that area, but I was wondering if anyone knew how deep that area is and if it's even possible.
If it's not possible I might just keep the 6's in the rear and power everything with a nice amp, but if it is then I want to look into it because I want to keep some of my trunk space.
I've look around and saw the Blaupunkt Thin-Line series subs (THW-1000) and it seems that if space is a problem in that area this could possibly work.

You can forget about behind the seats, I have already looked into this and there's very little room in the bulkhead. There is a thick steel plate covering the fuel tank. You can fit an 8 or 10 inch sub in a small box and install it in the trunk.
Alright, thanks for the quick response. The guy at best buy also suggested under the seats but there's little to no room underneath there either, plus I'd have to buy two and I personally wouldn't want bass directly under my butt.
Bah, I might have to get 2 small 8" or 2 Shallow 10"s in custom boxes to maximize trunk space.

The speakers behind the seats are already longer throw bass units and are ported already in that 'hollow' behind the steel wall with the fuel tank.
You can probably just replace those with higher end units without going bigger in size. The bass response is wonderfull on those.
The main speakers in the door should also provide plenty of sub-bass response as well unless you did the 'capacitor mod'.
If you want your car to 'jack-hammer' others on the road... get a big ported box and suffer without the trunk space.
Cheers!

I have a Panasonic head unit and I put new infinity 6 3/4 speakers in the doors. I use an Alpine MRV-F345 amp (75 watts per ch) to run them. I still have the factory amp running the subs for now. I get a lot more bass than before with this setup. I have already bought an Infinity Kappa 10 inch sub but have not had time to build the box for it yet. It will not take up too much room in the trunk (I hope) lol.
If you don't want to sacrifice trunk space, you can install a small 8 in the passenger floor in a custom box. We have done many of these in Porsches and Ferraris and other small cars. You loose about 6 inches of foot room. You also need to go to a shop that knows what they are doing.
Remember also that there is almost two inches of padding in the floor to go over support sections, wiring troughs, etc.
You COULD build a shallow bass box with the speaker under the seat and the port just in front of the seat.
This area would be better used for amps though. Pull the carpet up, you will be surprised how thick the padding is under there... (yes, you have to remove the seat to do this).
