Default Rear View Camera Systems

On a previous car I owned, I installed a back-up warning sensor system and found it very helpful as vision was difficult behind the vehicle.

With my Crossfire, I'm contemplating something more advanced. Has anyone installed one of these rear-view camera systems?

I've been looking at several brands...here is one source:
http://www.4ucam.com/index.html#backup

Does anyone have any suggestions or experience to comment about these?

Thanks

The only suggestion I have is one that'll end up costing you more. Most DVD head unit systems allow for rear camera add-ons. Granted it will cost a decent amount of front but you won't have a bulky-looking LCD fixture somewhere on the dash.

Did you install it yourself? Has that wireless feature been reliable? Lastly, would you buy this unit again if you were to do it over?

Thanks...

I installed it myself I wired the camera to the left backup light and I plug in the monitor into the cigarrette lighter. The wireless is reliable good picture. The only thing that can be annoying is the monitor flickers on and off from other wireless signals so I turn it off when I'm driving. You could fix that by hooking it up to to stay on all the time. Would I buy it again? yes for the price you can't go wrong most cost a lot more but I've only had it for a few months so I don't know how it will be long term. The only other thing is after driving the car for a few months now I find myself not needing the camera but it does come in handy when needed.

Plus the camera doesn't really help when you're backing out of a space when a truck or suv is parked beside you.

https://www.crossfireforum.org/forum...ad.php?t=16592 I put mine in the mirror I wired it to the lights. But i was going to wire it to the wing cause that is really the only time I figured I would need it. I still have the mirror with the monitor in it... It needs some work, I decided to paint the mirror because I was having problems seeing out of the mirror and end up with a run. It would need to be sanded out and repainted. I am a perfectionist you might not even care or notice it. It works with that camera system, I AM SURE OF IT BECAUSE I WENT THROUGH THREE CAMERAS and never switched the monitor.

I think it is all the same bluetooth signal. PM me if you are intrested in the monitor in the mirror pictured in my thread.
Ohh the reason I still have it is I sold the car, It is the same stock mirror and I put a ton of work into it, I was going to use it on my SRT6 but opted against it because this wing is not as bad to see over. Let me know WE can work something out...

I hardwired it In and never had a problem with it flickering. If anyone wants to try and tackle this themselves I can help you out on how to put it into the mirror and not have as much trouble as I did. BE PREPARED TO PUT IN SOME HOURS THOUGH>>

I will PM you...I've been considering the mirror-mount systems, but would rather not have wires dangling down which I suspect such a setup requires. I've also not intended to use the cigarette lighter as a power source for similar reasons. Plus, I keep a cellphone plugged into it.

Right now, I'm leaning towards a 7" monitor mounted to the left of the instrument cluster, by the left windshield brace. I figure wires can be easily traced down that post and kept out of view.

I've had my camera added with my pioneer tv for 6 months now....It's really helpful considering the major blind spots in the Crossfire.

You replaced the stock radio/cd with a Pioneer DVD/TV unit? Has that worked outpretty good? Are you pleased with the sound and other functions? Does your Pioneer provide GPS? Sorry to ask so many questions...been thinking about doing this swap myself.

I definitely can tell a difference in quality. I actually love the upgrade. My head unit also includes the gps, and ipod option too. I have my camera installed where I can flip a small hidden switch and my rearview camera activates when I want. It comes in handy...

I installed one myself 2 weeks ago from costco for $80.
It helps a little bit when backing up, but not really super helpful as what I expected.
I guess they only good for seeing how much distance between the car or objects behind you, but not surrounding areas.

I install rear view systems quite often and I would suggest something like the following .
http://search.ebay.com/search/search...+lcd&category0=

or ...

http://search.ebay.com/search/search...n+dash+3.5+lcd

The LCD rearview mirror replacement is what I am going to use . All power and signal is through one small din cable that goes up to the headliner and down the door post so there is really nothing to see . You can get Bluetooth also which displays your calls on the same screen and has a built in mic/spkr for hands free calls . The whole thing is a regular rearview mirror until the video signal is applied and then you see the screen .

I've seen many problems from the cheap wireless units plus the displays usually do not have good enough contrast/brightness to be visible in many daylight conditions or large enough area (field of view) to be of much use .

So, did you ever install one of the backup cameras?

Hi Robby363,
I bought the same type of system. I actually bought (2), (1) for my V8 Volvo Bertone that I mounted on the front spoiler so I don't wack it again on a curb. The other to mount at the rear for my 04 Xfire. So, how did you get the wire from the camera through to the inside to connect to the reverse lights? I can't find anyway through unless I take the rear bumper fascia off...which I don't want to do. I would rather drill a hole, if I have to, behind the license plate. Please let me know how you did yours. I'm also thinking about connecting the camera to a switch so that I can use it anytime without being in reverse. Please advise.
Thanks,
Randy

I drilled a small hole to run the wire through. I don't use it anymore. It worked great for about 2 months until the camera got water in it and stopped working. You might want to put some silicone or some type of sealer on the back of the camera where the wire goes in. I think that's how the water got in. I hope you have better luck with it then I did.

I got a JVC KDNX-5000 and got a license plate back-up cam it just mounted on the screws of the license plate which is nice because when the rear hatch is closed you cant even see it unless your practically on the ground but the view from the camera is not hindered in the least. Professionally installed and when i put the vehicle into reverse it automatically goes to the camera...overall a good system

one question i have with the install is it sounds like you have it installed to the top screws of the license plate but how do you get to the hatch pull?

On the install I got there is just enough room to pop the hatch open when it is down, it doesn't quite actually touch the cam so you can just (I mean just barely but it works) get it open I would post a pic but I'm away from the car right now and will be for at least another month. And this install was not wireless but the guy did it such a way that I don't see any wires anywhere just where they come out to attach to the cam maybe an inch of wires showing.
