Default GPS Software

Forgive me if this has been covered before...I looked but couldn't find an answer to my question. I understand some of you have installed in-dash DVD/CD/GPS/Stereo systems replacing the factory CD radio unit. I've read postings comparing one brand (Pioneer, Kenwood, Eclipse) over another and those have been helpful. But I see "hints" within those postings that suggest while some aspects of these components work better in one brand as compared to another, little is said about the GPS software that comes with them.

My question here is: What GPS software would your recommend and which would you avoid? How good is Route 66? I would hope to have a GPS package that could be readily updatable, either by CD, DVD, or other input medium.

Thanks for your suggestions...

Most of the GPS software that comes with the major manufacturers are proprietary to the manufacturer. Myself, I recommend iGuidance v4. It installs on a Laptop, UMPC or Windows Mobile. Supposedly you can get some chinese deck that runs on the WinCE 4.2 platform and install either iGuidance or TomTom 6.

Thanks for your response. Knowing that one likely does not have any flexibility in changing the GPS software in a DVD/CD/GPS/Stereo head unit (because of that proprietory restriction), I was trying to find out which head unit (system) had the top recommendations from the standpoint of the GPS software only and not other aspects of the system. In other words, if your system uses Route 66, what do you like/dislike about that GPS product?

I have the Garmin Nuvi, it's a standalone unit, not mounted in dash. You can either buy the DVD from Garmin and they can mail it to you or, connect via USB to laptop with internet connection and update it. I like it very much
