Default Nav Stereo tunes in to 103.1 FM at startup?! (Regional Linking)

My nav stereo has this strange habit of tuning into 103.1 FM when I start the car. It doesn't seem to do it when I was last listening to the CD when I shut it off, and it seems to do this more often when I haven't driven the car for a couple of days. I'm not sure if this is related to the TP programming, but I believe that is turned off in the options. Has anybody seen anything like this before? TIA.

This has come up before. I believe it is some sort of default that relates to the remote used (can't remember exactly). Seems that NeedsWings had this same issue. You may want to search on the subject with NeedsWings as a poster.
Good luck.

You can set a default radio station. It's one of the choices in the settings.

Thanks guys! I tried a couple quick searches and got nowhere fast, so I just figured I'd post instead. I had only looked at the Navigation manual, which did not mention any "User" menu, IIRC. Just for reference, here's a link to the relevant manual, from the previous thread:

When you go in here and select a user as described - it saves the current station on the radio. So pick the station you want for a default before you come in here...
I'm still not 100% clear on whether this user setting is related to the key used (it seems like it from the posts), or whether I can get rid of this default station completely (so that it just sticks to the last station when you turn the car off), but I'm sure I can answer these questions quickly just playing with the user menu for a few minutes. I'll post up if I figure out any new info. Thanks again.

The manual is real helpful once you read it a couple times.

So it seems that I spoke too soon. I just tried the trick mentioned in pg. 14 of the manual I linked to previously, but there's quite a few differences between the nav and non-nav systems besides just the GPS capability. To get to the User menu in the non-nav, you hold down OPT for more than a couple seconds. For the nav, you hold down AUD for more than 2 seconds. Unfortunately, the two menus control different settings (compare p.14 in the previous link to the NAV manual, pg. 97) No user memory option can be found in the NAV's user menu. Holding OPT down for more than a couple seconds does nothing for me.

So with that said, I'm still trying to figure out how to access the NAV stereo's user memory, if there is one. Otherwise, I'll have to conclude that my Crossfire's ghost really, really likes techno music and 103.1 FM.

Check page 29 of the nav manual - maybe it has something to do with the TP Tracking. Might be worth running through that to see if "TP" is displayed or if clearing the TP setting changes anything for you.

So, I was tracking this issue a little bit more, and I noticed that my original assumption may not have been completely accurate. It doesn't seem to be tied to starting the car up, but instead to one specific station that I listen to regularly. It's a not-so-local station (and thus has a slightly weaker signal, but still strong enough for stereo signal, and no noticeable drop in quality 95% of the time). I got this idea from a little stretch recently where I would tune to this station (by preset), and the stereo would automagically tune itself to 103.1 FM within 15 seconds. It was a constant battle with the stereo, where I would tune it back to the non-local station, and then it would tune it back to 103.1 FM. Here's my observations so far:

- I've verified that TP is off for my stereo, so I don't think it's related (for now).
- However, I thought I remembered reading something in the manual about "diversity tuning" or "follow-me tuning" or something similar.
- This involves stations that are "tied" together in broadcast (this is used in remote areas so that, as you drive away from one station, you just tune to the other station which has the same exact broadcast). The stereo will figure out which stations are "tied" together (from a code in the broadcast) and automatically tune to the station with the stronger signal at any given moment.
- In this case, the broadcasts do not appear to be the same, but perhaps the code sent in the broadcast may be incorrect (or not valid for my region).

I haven't had time to dig through the manual again, but I think I read this diversity tuning stuff in there. I think there should be a way to turn it off, and hopefully that will make the voices stop.

So, I finally figured this thing out.

It has to do with the RDS option AND the regional linking.

It seems that the station had regional linking available (99.1 FM was tied to 103.1 FM). Problem is, that "tying" wasn't valid for the area I was in, so I was getting a completely different station whenever my signal got a little weak.

Now here's the kicker. I had RDS turned off on the stereo (see Nav. manual p. 23). When RDS is off, you don't even have the option to configure the "Reg" and "PTY" settings ("Reg" being the Regional linking option). Regional linking is automatically on when RDS is off, and you cannot change this.

So I turn RDS on, and I check my current setting for regional linking. It's off. So, I drive around a little bit, and see if the stereo wants to mess with me again. Amazingly, it stays on 99.1 FM!

Cliff's notes:

- Regional linking is great, if you're traveling between the right areas. Not so much if you're not.
- Regional linking is automatically on if you have RDS off (you can't change the setting).
- You can turn regional linking on or off, only if you have RDS activated.

This is applicable for the stereo with nav. YMMV with non-nav (probably N/A).

ok, i found the default station, it was preeset #1 while i had rds turned on, so i turned it on, found the stattion and could nto maually dial in the station i wanted as apparently it was not a rds station. i picked my second choice out of my normal presets to copy into the #1 preset. i then went and turned off rds so i can manually change the radio station when using the radio. that way i can at least have my second choice be my default when the car starts up instead fo the unwanted station that was there before. does that all make sense?
