Default Blaupunkt Memphis MP66 install question

I just nabbed a MP66 off ebay. Bought it from cantechnomart for $130. He has another MP66 up for auction, along with a Blaupunkt Hamburg MP68 with built-in Bluetooth listed.

Reading through the forums has helped a great deal but was needing a couple of quarks cleared up. I am wondering if I need to get an antenna adapter for it, and if so, which one? Also, do I need to do the telephone mute pin out? I drive a 2005 N/A Limited w/ no nav radio. Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is my first attempt at a radio change-out.

I picked my adapter for my Memphis at BestBuy. I just asked the car stereo person for one for a CrossFire, and I'm pretty sure this was the one. Its a US male to euro female. This one is amplified which really helped the reception using the hidden antenna in the CrossFire.

"Scosche - Amplified Antenna Adapter for Select Vehicles

Model: VWA4B SKU: 7276752

Compatible with select vehicles
Including 2000 and newer Audi, BMW and Volkswagen models to update your vehicle's sound system."

The phone mute wire isn't needed because its for an add on blue tooth module. The Memphis is plug and play which is sweet. Just match the factory plug with the section on the back of the radio that's the same shape and you're good to go! I used one of the other wiring harnesses that came with the radio just for the remote turn on wire for powering the antenna.

You will need to use the metal sleeve that comes with the radio. Just dry fit the sleeve to get it in to the right depth for what looks best, then bend the retaining tabs and lock it in place. Swapping the Blaupunkt for the stock radio is a super quick, easy job.

Thanx for the great info Tom. I was pretty sure about the adapter but I like the amplified version even more.
Can't tell you how sweet this forum has been. Aside from tires and alignment, I've been able to fix and mod everything on my car which has saved me a pant load! Really appreciate everyone's input.

You are welcome.

I've only had my CrossFire for just shy of 6 months now and I've taken a lot of information from this forum. Glad to be able to give something back!

I've had the Memphis since December and am quite happy with it. The menu system can take some practice to get used to. One thing I don't like about it, is the need to enter the menu simply to switch from AM to FM. I like to listen to AM for a few minute in the morning on the way to work to hear local news, and switch back to FM late. Also having to push a button twice to change a station is odd, but hardly difficult. I like the customizable equalizer.

Until about 10 days ago I didn't have antenna amplifier hooked up mostly because I didn't believe it would work. I live in a rural area in a bit of a radio signal hole and signals come and go until I drive about 5 miles in either direction even for local stations. I'm also about a hour's drive from one major city and an hour and a half from another so thier signals aren't the stongest either. Since hooking up power to the antenna adapter the signals are strong and steady. Soulda' hooked it up in the first place. Well with the $15 I paid for the adapter.

Good luck with the installation.

FYI, if you go to the gallery section and click on General Crossfire Pictures, there's a photo of my Memphis installed. I'm happy with the way it looks even without the trim ring painted silver.

Hey Tom -
Did you stay with the factory amp? I have the Memphis as well, but not installed yet, and am going to upgrade the amp to an Alpine PDX F4. Speakers - I don't know yet - I'll see how the factory issues sound first.
Tnx
John

Yes, I'm using the factory amp and it is doing well. I am not running the factory speakers though so the amp and wiring are the only origonal components in my stereo.

I've modified my stereo in steps, starting with the speakers, then added an Infinity BassLink sub. Next was the Memphis and most recently I added another small amp running off the Memphis rear pre amp RCAs to drive a pair of 3-1/2" speakers in the rear corners of the trunk area.

The replacement speakers in the doors are 4 ohms and are less efficent than the factory Infinitys so I'm pushing the factory amp harder for any given volume and it is doing well. I do wonder how much an improvment an aftermarket amp would be. I may tackle that poject later in the future.
