Default HELP! Reverse Lights Wired to Radio Harness?

I posted a few days ago that I tried to install the Blaupunkt London MP37 and was getting the "PHONE" error that everyone else got. According to the directions, you are supposed to cut the telephone mute wire on SOCKET A, PIN 2 of the stock wiring harness. On my harness in this location there are two yellow wires with a gray stripe going into this one pin.

When I cut both of these wires, the radio works but I no longer have working reverse lights (which is why my backup camera stopped working). It's definitely not an aftermarket wiring harness but I wonder if they changed the wiring harness colors (or am I cutting the wrong wire(s)? I have the stock headunit with NAV.

After re-connecting the wires I cut, my reverse lamps work again as does my back-up camera.

I really need some assistance before I decide to return the radio and deal with not have a source for my MP3 player.

The OEM Nav unit uses a signal from the reverse circuit. This wire is added on 2005 cars and up. The 2004's have this wire already in the wiring harness.

So it sounds like I am cutting the wrong wire?

Does anyone have a good picture of the harness that can point out the correct wire to cut to disable the phone mute for the Blaupunkt HU's?

The Master, MMZ_TimeLord, posted this on the pins for the nav radio.

Hey guys I need some help from any of you radio/electronic experts.

I did an install of a Blaupunkt Memphis Mp66 radio almost a year ago. Had the phone/mute issue, researched here, found the wire to cut, all good. Last night I realize the reverse lights aren't working. Checked fuses, bulbs, then found this issue about the reverse lights on the stock harness. So the reverse lights haven't been working since I did the radio install. Doh! Sure enough if I reconnect the wires that I cut, I get the reverse lights, but the mute phone issue.

So as of now its one or the other. I tried to wire the reverse lights into a hot wire, but then they just stay on constant. So right now its either or, working radio or working reverse lights.

I'm stumped. Any Ideas. Thanks!!!!

JT

I thought about this a little more. All I need is to know the right wire to tap into from the reverse light wire that was previously tied into the old Nav radio.

Any body know what wire I can tap into that will only go hot when the car is put in reverse?

I read something about a reverse switch but I don't know where it is.

Thanks in advance.

Go to page six of this PDF and it shows you the reverse wire to the navigation radio.

So If I tap into the wire that 16 is pointing to I should be good? There were two wires that were plugged into the radio harnness that needed to be cut to fix the phone/mute issue for the Bluapunkt, do I need to tap both of them into this switched wire, or just one? What do you think?

Thank you so much, I think this will work. I can test one or both and see what happens. At least I have something to try.

Thanks man!!!

Why not just go old school and connect the trans switch to the reverse light maybe through a relay ?

Go to the trunk and tie into the backup lights. That will get you hot for backup Camera, etc.

What does GY/YL mean?
There are a bunch of wire in that harnness. I don't have any way to test all of the them to figure out which one is the reverse light wire.
Does anyone know which cable is it?

GY/YL means Gray and Yellow. You want the gray and yellow wire(s) going into the bottom right corner of the OEM NAV factory wire harness connector. Look at the PDF link offered in post #7 of this thread and see illustration #12.

GY/YL means the grey wire with the yellow stripe.

Yes normally but I looked at the actual wires referenced and they appear to be half grey and half yellow (not grey with a yellow stripe as you might normally expect). EDIT: I looked at the wires again (this time with my glasses on) and they are in fact grey with a yellow stripe. Chalk up another correct response for onehundred80!

Thank you and onehundred80 for taking the time to look at that crazy harness. When the rain subsides, I'll take a look at the grey wire with a yellow stripe.

Its always great to have a diagram with the actual color coded wires that were (supposed) to be used. I have found on occasion that either they mis-labeled a diagram(s) OR they ran out of a particular wire during the harness assembly and threw in whatever fit. This I found over many many years of pouring over factory manuals troubleshooting electrical glitches here and there for myself and others. Oh the joy when it actually matches, and the sadness when it doesn't (because then I'm either in the wrong harness OR someone screwed up (in the former, of course, I screwed up). If you cannot find the correct wire, recheck the harness your in [and] the pinout (sometimes they reverse, its easy to have happen). If your in the right connector/harness and you cannot find the 'correct' colored wire, be prepared to spend a period of time to trace everything out until you find the error. I would definitely suggest having non-colored lenses with a bright white light source to enhance the colors (shadows, yellow light sources, and colored lenses can make colors look different). Those automatic light adjusting glasses can really muck things up also. Just saying!
