Default ECU cooling fan

I've had a sound I hear inside the car that has been increasing in intensity over time. Tracking it down, it seems to be coming from the underhood box the ecu is in. I've read that there is a cooling fan in this thing that pulls air out of the passenger compartment to cool the ecu. Noise is just like a PC with a bad cooling fan. Anyone else had this issue?

Chrysler says the fan comes as part of the box - not available separately. Wanted to see what the options were before I took this thing apart.

Yup, mine howls like crazy for a few minutes when it gets cold out. Fine in the summer. It's under the RCM and ECU and looks like a pain to get at.

Hello,

if Chrysler won't sell the fan seperately, you can get the fan from a Mercedes-Benz dealer, or anywhere else.
MB OEM part number is: A 170 545 00 95

Regards
Markus

I have five, but have to figure out how attached to the plastic vent tube to get them off.

There are a number of threads on MBworld and others on this. There are a number of OEM 12VDC fans to fit. If you can get to yours, write down the number and do a Google search on it. From what I've read, this fails often and the Japanese replacements are longer-lived and much cheaper (~$20).

BTW- I think this fan also cools the stereo amp in the passenger floorboard. It will fail too if the fan goes...just sayin'.

Great info guys - thanks for the part numbers. Now I have to get my tail in gear and pull the thing. Replacing just the fan motor is a whole lot better than the ~$165 the dealer wanted for the entire enclosure.

With you on that. I didn't mind the screeching so much - it was when it quit making noise that I wondered did it just quiet down or quit running
