installation
Forum members. I am going to install my Kenwood 558 this weekend. Can someone please let me know how to properly install so I get all the functions fade and balance. Diagram will be excellent for the installer cause they have never installed a headunit on SRT6. I already have the harness from Crutchfield. Thanks.
Does no one see my post entitled D558BT Limited install w/rear speakers?. Alternatively, is there some grievous error in the method. This is the second post I have read since I posted the above, which directly answers the question asked.

The base does not come with a sub/amp/nav. The Limited generally does, and I believe our set-ups are identical. The issue you will have is that with the nav and rear speakers, the harness will not drive the rear speakers. You either have to wire the rear speakers in at the amp, or at the rear speakers, which the method describes. In talking with Crutchfield, they discovered that their "Master Sheet" was configured off of a base, which is where their plug-n-play instructions came from, and they will not apply to your car. Indeed, our conversations went so far that Crutchfield finally state that the D558BT will not work with the Crossfire HU with nav, and I should return the unit. As you research, you'll find that a few of us have figured out different ways around this (mine in my post), but step-by-step instructions are largely absent (unless you can follow my post). As to the correct harness, the 1786 might be adapted, but it was the tech's at Crutchfield, after a couple of hours on the phone and trying different applications, that finally sent me the 1784 which proved to be the one that best fit the application I used to get the speakers w/fade and balance working. Good luck.

As I said in the post, the 1786 can likely be made to work. Do not use the RCA's for the rear speakers however as they are out of pre-amps (as I understand), and will not drive the rear speakers. I am currently driving the front speakers with the direct wire connect from the 1784, and it seems to work fine. I was a beginner (although I probably did twenty stereos back in the seventies and early eighties before they got all wirey, amped up, and attached through dins and harnesses). With this, I spent two hours reading every post on this cite, and another three hours with Crutchfield techs (Casey, Virgel, and RJ) trying to come to a resolution. As a beginner, I finally engineered the solution, and the experts did not have a solution. Thus, arguably, this is only a job for a beginner. Also, ignoring the learning time referenced and time scratching my head, I probably spent less than four hours with time on task. I.e., I worked for three hours wiring the left rear speaker which I tackled first, and about forty-five minutes on the right rear speaker.
