0W-40 oil discontinued
Good day I'm new to the forum, bought my xfire Nov. '06 drove it for 2 weeks and put it away for the winter it's killing me not to drive it. I was in a local Parts Source today, sign by the Mobil 1 0W-40 said all the 0w oils are going to be discontinued telling us to use 5w oils instead. Is this a Canadian thing or is it all over ?
Mobil Oil doesn't mention anything on their website about discontinuing that weight of Mobil One. Maybe just that store is discontinuing it.

Mercedes Benz has approved Mobil1 5w-40 for all of it's vehicles that originally came with 0w-40.
We've been getting the 5w in bulk for a couple months and the last pallet of bottles that came in were the 5w also.
That's the oil in my SRT.

It is still on the shelves but they said once inventory is out that's it (Parts Source). I called them again to double check they could not tell me if it was there store only or across the board sales rep figured it was a mobil thing not store thing. Not sure to believe or not, time will tell.

Feets, do you have some kind of spec sheet from MB showing the approved substitution of 5w for 0w that can be scanned and uploaded to the forum for individual downloading and storage with owners' manuals and other records? That would be very helpful for all of us. Thanks.
I'm moving to the body shop counter on Monday and don't know when I'll have time to locate the file. Things get ugly busy over there.

FYI.
I went to Auto Zone yesterday and they had 9 quarts of 0w-40. The workers didn't say anything about not getting it anymore. I did clean them out though.

Tthis has nothing to do with oil but I recognised your Plymouth Belvedeer

This has nothing to do with oil, but I noticed your Plymouth Belvedeer.
Is that a 63? Does it have the 383, 4-speed Hurst?
My dad owned a 1964 Sport Fury 318 Push button Auto, hardtop. I think the only problem he ever had was with the automatic choke.
Just wanted to chime in. I spoke with a MB mechanic in scottsdale, Az. And he told me do not use the 5-40. And only use the 0-40 because the tolerances were so tight in our motors. Instead of using the mobil, becuase its noisy as hell, I went with the AmsOil and have been super happy.

I use Amsoil exclusively but they do not make a 0W40 that I am aware of. Are you sure? Did you already purchase it?

A quick check on GOOGLE for Mercedes 229.5 pulls up an extensive list of MB approved oils for all vehicles, the kicker is the reference to Mobil 1 Eurpoean Spec oil never seen this anywhere
Our recommended oil is still available (but hard to find in stores). The following was taken from the MOBIL1 website today, January 1, 2008:
Mobil 1 0W-40
Our lineup of Mobil 1 motor oils includes a 0W-40 viscosity, which is the viscosity recommended by many European car builders. Mobil 1 0W-40's wide viscosity range provides unsurpassed levels of protection and an overall smooth driving experience. Mobil 1 0W-40 keeps engines starting in Arctic-extreme cold, and it cleans deposits, sludge and varnish often formed in high temperature operating conditions.

Maybe in the colder regions specially in the winter 0w-40 would offer better protection at starup because it would flow more freely but once the engine has warmed up then it would not matter. So my line of thinking is that in the temperate regions like California or Florida 5w-40 should be ok. Would I be doing harm to my engine if I did this?
I do know someone else that used 5W-40 and once in a while they get tapping noise for a few seconds at times during start up which did not ocur with 0W-40. Could just be a coincidence but maybe not.
