Re: 0W-40 oil discontinued
believe it or not synthetic oil starts out as regular crude, then is refined down to a point that the fossil portion is gone and only contains certain molecules. I am not an oil chemist but I believe it takes about 2 qts of crude oil to make 1 qt of synthetic oil! I have been in the auto repair biz for 20 yrs and just learned this about a year ago.so yes synthetic oil prices are tied to crude prices.

Synthetic oil is oil consisting of chemical compounds which were not originally present in crude oil (petroleum) but were artificially made (synthesized) from other compounds. Synthetic oil could be made to be a substitute for petroleum or specially made to be a substitute for a lubricant oil such as conventional (or mineral) motor oil refined from petroleum. When a synthetic oil or synthetic fuel is made as a substitute for petroleum, it is generally produced because of a shortage of petroleum or because petroleum is too expensive. When synthetic oil is made as a substitute for lubricant refined from petroleum, it is generally to provide superior mechanical and chemical properties than those found in traditional mineral oils.

Re: 0W-40 oil discontinued
if you read the entire article on wiki, you'll see that it begins fossil based in most occasions, I do see the reference to completely man made. But My vendors reps including mobile one and castrol both tell me it starts as crude, then is super refined. Like I said I'm not a chemist, or expert but getting materials from oil sands and hydrocarbons sounds crude based to me, read the whole thing. Maybe in war times it was different?

If you look at the Mercedes 299.5 page you will see all the oils that fall into this range---there are many oils that meet the 299.5 criteria, some not for sale in North America but it still offers a lot of options, the listers that say 0/40 is the only oil for our cars do not understand the 299.5 spec and what oils meet it, the range is small but it allows up to 10/40 and if you investigate you can find diesel synthetic that is better than std synthetic----more Boron in diesel, good for bearing life]
]There are many web page of oil investigation, I run 15/40 Diesel syn in all my other vehicles, 03 Focus, 2000 Dakota R/T and 98 Sportster 1200 Sport -no problems in over 110,000 miles on the Dakota
as to the Crossfire I will defer to the list in the oil selection and stay away from any 15+ combinations

Re: 0W-40 oil discontinued
Just spoke with Exon-Mobil and they let me know via Email and voice that they are not discontinuing production of Mobil One 0-40! The problem you must have had is a supplier stoped ordering product from lack os sales. This information is as of Jan. 2, 2008 7:29 AM PST. It makes me feel a little betterand I am sure the rest of the Forum would appreciate the news!

I guess I don't feel so bad about it being $5.67 at my the Wal-Mart near where I work.
Re: 0W-40 oil discontinued
Just visited the local Advance Auto Parts store in Belleville, IL to buy some K&N filters for the car
They had a whole shelf full of Mobil 1 0W-40 @ $5.69 a quart. Sales staff had heard nothing about it being discontinued
BTW - Advance Auto gives a 10% military discount on each purchase (AD or retired - doesn't make a difference)
Cheers

Re: 0W-40 oil discontinued
Hey all you Canucks out there . . . .yes, Parts Source has the 0W-40 on sale til end of January 30. HOWEVER !!!!!! . . . . after buying up all they had at my local shop, they advised they had PLENTY on order, and were NOT going to discontinue carrying that weight ! The sales are not thru the roof, but it is steady enough for them to continue carrying this viscosity !!! Check your local Parts Source before you buy elsewhere (unless someone finds it cheaper . . . . ) . . . . .

Re: 0W-40 oil discontinued
From the horses mouth.... Mobil and Esso recently merged, actually Esso bought Mobil. The Mobil 1, 0-40, is in fact discontinued in Canada and Europe. BUT it was replaced by Mobil Delvac 1, 0-40 diesel, which now has European manufacturers spec standards. The only thing is that it is not available in 1 litres but only in 4 litres jugs. I received this information from 1-800-567-ESSO (3776), and it was confirmed to me by my Chrysler dealer and the by the Lube X tech when I got my oil change yesterday. That's the oil the Chrysler dealer uses as well.
The Esso customer service lady said that the website will be updated once stocks of Mobil 1 are depleted. Apparently they have had many calls on the subject.
Good enough for me...
