Key Fob Question
My dealer ordered a second key for me when I bought my car (they had lost one). It arrived in the mail yesterday. The key works, but the buttons do not. Is there anything a dealer has to program for the fob to work with the car - or is it probably just a dead battery?
Heh, good question (and good idea)! I had assumed that it had batteries, but maybe it doesn't. When I get home I will check, and if there is a battery then I will swap in the ones from the working fob and see what happens. If that doesn't work I guess I can take the fob to a dealer and see what's up.
When a key is ordered from Germany, it comes pre-cut and will work, but the buttons have to be programmed by the dealer. It will take about 5 minutes for them to do it.
Thanks for the replies! The key was ordered from Germany and drop shipped to me. So that is probably what is wrong. I'll check the batteries just in case, but I'll plan on swinging by the dealer to have the buttons programmed.

i agree; make sure the fob has batteries. once you've completed that... turn the car on with the new key, and then try the door locks. mine wouldn't work until i started the car with it.
I forget the instruction but I believe you can program the key fob on your own. I just can't seem to find the thread where this is discussed maybe someone else can chime in here with the instructions?
I don't know if this has anything to do with being able to start the car or just to open the doors but the owner's manual says...
"The system may have to be resynchronized if the transmitter (key fob) is without sufficient voltage for several minutes. To synchronize, aim the transmitter eye at the vehicle and briefly press either the lock or the unlock button twice. Within approximately 30 seconds, insert the key in the ignition and turn it to the ON/RUN position. The remote control should once again be operational."
