Spoke to a good friend of mine who owns a car repair shop. I asked him what oil filter other than what the dealers use would he recommend and without blinking he said WIX. Has anyone used this brand. I checked and they do make filters for our vehicles.

 

I don't know anything about WIX filters and have never seen one, but keep in mind DC changed from "paper" filters to "fleece" filters awhile back. The WIX filter is "paper" NOT "fleece". The pic and the filter information below were taken from their website:

Me, I'd stick with the recommended "fleece" filter. I have seen the FRAM, STP and Mobil 1 aftermarket filters... they are paper and of poor quality. They are no where near the quality of either the old DC paper filter or the new DC fleece filter.



Edit: I just checked with a few retailers in my area. The WIX filters for the Crossfire/SLK320 sell for $21.00 - $22.00 plus tax. My DC dealer sells the "fleece" filter for $19.50 plus tax. So... no $$$ savings on the WIX filter and I would guess they are of lessor quality as the OEM filter.

 

10 years ago I worked in a truck repair shop and we used Wix filters alot and they are amongst the leaders in filtration for the trucking industry, along with Baldwin. Keep in mind that M-B is also a leader in the trucking industry, so this is why they probably make em' for our cars. Now as far as the Mobil 1 filter, are we sure they make em' for our car or not. Personally I like the Mobil 1 filter because of the amount of synthetic media inside the filter. I have one more of the old style oil filters because I bought (2) of them last year, $12.00 a piece. I just recently had service "B" done to my car and I'm sure they used the new fleece style oil filter.

 

Wix (or NAPA) also has a synthetic (fleece) filter for the Crossfire. The Wix #57078 or NAPA #7078. You can't get one any better.

Yes, I am sure... they do make them for the Crossfire. Earlier this year someone on the forum posted something about a good price they got at a Mobil 1 express lube for an oil change. The price for the oil change seemed too low to be real so I went to the same store to check it out. I asked to see the filter they used... it was a very cheap paper filter, made in India. It was of poorer quality than the FRAM and STP filters I had looked at previous to my visit to
Mobil 1.

Good find!!! I didn't see it when I looked at the WIX website. I'll call around and see how much they are selling for.

 

The quick lube might say Mobil 1 but that filter isn't, but I'm sure the quality was cheap considering the usual Mobil 1 filter for most cars is about $12.00 and they don't go around throwing them into cars I'm sure, no matter what the name says on the building. I say stick with Mopar or the Wix filter and you'll be all set, even buy your own and take it with you and have them adjust the price accordingly when you had them your own.

 

I just bought two of Wix 57078 oil filters from Rockauto.com for $10 something each. One is the new Mann fleece filter and one is the old style paper filter. The paper one is probably fine but I think I will return it anyway.

I changed the oil and filter today on "Chuck" today for the first time. Old school style and drained the oil by using the plug. I happened to have a filter wrench from some car of my past that fit perfectly which made it a snap. I plan on 5K changes with Mobil 1.

 

That's cool folks; as long as I have the factory 7/70k warranty on the drive train in force I ain't looking to save money on a filter that is replaced rarely enough as it is. I do my own oil changes through the top with a Topsider and I'll be replacing my filter with a direct replacement part from Mercedes or Chrysler and saving the receipts. All the better if you have engine trouble down the road and the warranty is still in force...

 

I'd have to agree with AERO BLUE & VQ35DE, WIX is a top of the line filter. I use to work at a coal mine and that's all we used, not to say that the MB filters are not any better.

 

the picture was a i.e. felt filter ... what i got in the box was a napa paper filter.
also had napa dealer to order a new one maybe a mis-boxed item same thing

I just got off the phone with Mobil 1 "Filter Hotline" where I was told that they do not yet make a canister type filter for any cars. They hope to offer one in 4-5 months time.

 

Found another reasonable source for filters. $10 for the Bosch fleece. My dealer only uses paper. Fleece is not available there. Anyhow, here's the link:

If it helps you fleece vs filter fans to sleep at night, I can assure you that this topic is rarely discussed in places where guys spend tens of thousands of dollars on crazy high horsepower engines. Just buy a good quality filter and be done with it.

If these 3.2 engines are so fussy that a paper vs fleece filter does it in, I'll go ahead and sell our Crossfire before the wife gets completely attached to it. Seriously, if K&N oil filters can support 1,000+ hp forced induction engines and not worry owners, I think they'll do fine on a Crossfire.

Does anyone actually have quantative data showing the benefits of fleece over paper over an extended period of time? Open to being made a believer...
