I so believe this... I never liked the way they do business... and I myself am a Lexus owner.

I think you guys are right on in your perception of the economic status of car owners in their choice of cars and their ability, financially to keep the cars up. I think quality wise, the cars are about the same if maintained the same way. Heck, most of the "foreign" cars are made in the united states by americans now anyway.
I am just as guilty as the next guy, though. I have had toyotas and hondas and driven them until the wheels fell off. When we replaced out last family car, we looked at the chrysler 300 and cadillac cts. I talked my wife into a volvo s-60 because of the perceived better safety features and better reliability when the others are rated as good or better in consumer reports. I myself bought a dodge dakota extended cap a few years ago. It was a great truck and gave me no trouble, but I dumped it because I was commuting 120 miles a day and the truck never got more than 18 mpg. I just bought a nissan frontier 4-door. Paid more for the truck and it gets, you guessed it, 18 mpg.

Well take it from a 20 year Volvo owner. It's a great car, and guess what? It's American. It's owned by Ford. I drove my '87 740 GLE for 15 years, 250K miles and when I finally got rid of it (only because I wanted a new car and kept putting it off). It still looked and drove like it had 20K miles. Never broke down on me, and never took it in for warranty work.

I know quite a few people that have had serious mechanical problems with Nissan/Infiniti cars. One had to replace the tranny just after it went out of warranty. Even Toyota has admitted that their quality has slipped, and they are going to refocus on building more reliable cars like they did in the 90's.

Yea it is pretty bad... only a very small percentage of people read the car forums or know more about their car than the brand and the name of the car. People just do not research this stuff for whatever reason.. they go to a brand that sounds good to them and they can afford and the dealer shoves them whatever... I have seen this happen way WAY too many times...

Probably only about .000001% of the population know that crossfire and the slk are the same car...

Now that Chrysler and Mercedes are parting ways -

We could end up owning the only true auto that was a product of that marriage.
What that will do for the Crossfire value - only time will tell - it could actually stem the declining resale value and turn it around or...

The sticker price for my Xfire was ~ 35K in 2004, I got it last month for $19,200...personally I'm glad the value dropped to that level otherwise I would've NEVER considered owning this car. I got a GREAT deal at the right time and I'll probably keep this car for at least a decade...and like the post above me says...if Daimler and Chrysler split, then this truly is a classic.

FP... Wasn't Volvo a Swedish company back in '87 and it was not owned by Ford?

I'm not sure exactly when it was that Volvo became a division of the Blue Oval, but it really doesn't matter (as far as Ford's concerned). I've actually seen an ad by Ford where they were proudly displaying their past success stories, and along with old Mustang photos, GT 40's, and NASCAR accomplishments, there was a photo of a XKE Jag, along with Volvos too.
It's funny, I can remember when Mr. Ford wanted to buy Ferrari, but I have no recollection of his interest in the XKE, or the Volvo for that matter.

This week with all the snow and ice I have to admit I have been driving my wife's 2000 Volvo s70. Nice car, we've had it for 3 years and its been virtually trouble free. Beautiful car, british racing green, tan leather with wood trim.
If Chrysler goes GM I'm done with them, I'll keep the Crossfire but I have not had good luck with GM cars...I'll go import again before I drive another GM product.

If Chrysler goes GM, then I'm done too...I'll just stick with my x-fire and old Mopar cars...Nothing they (GM) have offered has excited me enough to consider purchase...I just have never been a GM guy...
