What to buy ? Coupe / Convertible
Hi All,
I am new to the site, but heck of place you have here ! Think I might move in !
I am on the cusp of buying my first Crossfire and the only thing I know for sure is I want one... just which one !
I started out loving the coupe, then saw a convertible and was hooked... Now thinking about it, the coupe might be a more practical purchase for boot space (trunk space) and general use.
So, what would be your advice - coupe or convertible... I don't think there is a wrong answer.
My heart says convertible, my head says coupe...
Also - I am edging towards gunmetal gray or black as colours ?
Thanks for your advice and opinions.
PS: I live in the UK - so the weather is... well very British !

For the UK, I would lean more toward coupe...if the UK was more sunny (Like here in FL, not sure when it rained last) then it would be worth getting the Roadster. I liked driving the roadster but it was better to hope back into my car with a hard top.
Obviously I'm biased here, but the trunk space of the roadster really isn't that bad with the top up, just don't expect to get anything big in there

Do you plan on using the Crossfire as a daily driver?
If so, I say coupe. But if you plan on stashing it away for sunny/warm days only - I say roadster.

The coupe is a much better looking car. In roadster form the Crossfire just does not have that same distinctive look (though it obviously still stands out in a crowd). Not meaning to offend you roadster owners, I just think the Crossfire is one of those cars that would have been best left in coupe only form.
Hi all those who have responded.
It is going to be a 'weekend' car, but I want a practical one for weekends away and the occasional road trip... my concern is that the roadster will suffer in the long-term due to space...
I do agree that the coupe looks better from behind... a view I intend to make sure other drivers see !
I am leaning towards a coupe at the moment I have to say.

I don't mean this as a flame, but if a Roadster isn't calling out to you, you don't really want one. Personally, I think the Roadster looks better (not that either look bad), and with the top down, well - there's nothing better to do with your clothes on!
Either way, you'll have a car that is more than just a ride - it's a lifestyle!

ROADSTER ROCKS!
I daily drive...try 150 mph in sub zero temps!
When it heavy snows I have a dodge durango...once its plowed I am back in the roadster.
I do not fit in the coupe!
I am talking bent head to the side to sit in it.
As for looks I am sold on my SRT Roadster...and even more rare then the coupes...which makes me smile even more.
K.K.

Yea i first looked at coupes, then i drove a roadster. But it just wasn't the same. It doesn't nearly have the distinctive side view/rear view. Thats on the major things i love about the look of the car, the boat-tail. So even though i did think it would be cool to have a drop-top during the summer, I just really liked the look of the coupe, I think it looks more sporty
Hey Smoked,
There are pros n cons to both.
I think both look really good. You can definitely enjoy the Roadster more when it is warm and not raining. But when its cold / snows, the roadster can be a hassle. There is more head room in the roadster. Depends on how tall you are. There is more trunk room in the coupe. See which car fits your needs better.
I would encourage you to go for the SRT6 if you can spare the squiddage. They are pretty rare, especially the roadster. They are significantly faster than the base and limited and come fully equipped. You will enjoy the ride no matter which xfire you choose.

Romio - I think you have probably hit the nail on the head... Don't get me wrong, the roadster is stunning and I do currently have a cabriolet, but the coupe looks so sleek.
I purchased my XF about a month ago and spent the month before going through the same internal conflict as you. I test drove each style a couple of times. Since this too was going to be my "weekend car" I had to consider what I do on weekends. As a competitive shooter, I actually took my gun cases (empty of course) with me to the dealer and tried to fit them in the trunk and they didn't fit in the roadster. The roadster can carry two people and barely a single bag if the top is down. (I have a friend who says that the XF luggage doesn't even fit in his roadster's trunk. German engineering at it's best!) I finally made my decision based on: I wanted to carry more than just a passenger; I like the lines of the coupe better (not that I haven't thought of buying a second XF, it being a roadster); and I already have a Sebring Convertible if the weather is fine and I want to drive a convertible. Good luck with your decision and just remember that you're going to be happy no matter which one you buy. You too may even want to buy a second...
being from england it might be a tough choice, but as far as comparing body styles, there really is no comparison, the coupe, is well a coupe. the funny angle of the spoiler and all looks a little awkward, while the roadster is by all accounts breathtaking and quite the head turner. for me there was no choice, the roadster rocks, and the coupe doesn't. i know the coupe guys think they look better, but really i think they are just in denial. the coupes are everywhere, and the new 2006 ones have srt wheels, that makes them look a little better than stock wheels. so if you go 2006 it might look a little better than the earlier years models. the ultimate would be a ltd roadster with a srt engine and brakes, if they made one!!!
the way the prices are coming down i'll probably buy a srt this summer and do the engine/brakes swap myself.

I am looking at the standard model rather than SRT.... In the UK we get only two versions. The SRT doesn't do it for me, a bit to aggressive.
I have to say - the more I think about it and look at the pictures, the more I am heading to the coupe. The roadster is great and all, but the part of a XF that turns my head is the lines over the roof and rear... the roadster just doesn't have that...
So - coupe it is... in gun metal or black...
If only we could pay your $ prices instead of our UK ubber prices !

I see that you have a "cab" now. Wouldn't it be fun to have something different, the coupe?
Especially since it was the "coupe concept" that started the Crossfire craze in the first place.

Hey, If it's a drop top crusier you want fine but a real SPORTSCAR ?
Coupes are, cheaper/stiffer/lighter/more-aerodynamic i.e...
More serious bang-for-the-buck !
Use the money you save to buy another set of wheels/tires for autoX/track days. Excuse me..."tyres" on your side of the pond...

Have a coupe now and I love it, LOVE IT. I didn't care for the roadster when it came out but I have to say I really do like them now, a lot.
As for the color black is a pain to maintain but its beautiful. I have graphite. After two black PT's I thought I'd take a break. No matter what you choose I'm sure you'll enjoy the car and the countless hours I know you'll spend keeping it shined up.
Good luck.
