Unhappy It finally happened, my cup holder broke...

I knew the day would come. This morning when I got in the XF I saw it. The cup holder was not closed like I left it. I tried to close it, but no use. It just popped right back open. My first major repair... I was heart broken. My day shattered. I put the cover back on the XF, and drove the diesel Dodge to work. A sad day indeed. I may need a few days off just to recover... I hope the rest of you have a better day than I have...

it is for the better now you get to replace it with a useful storage bin instead of that flawed excuse of a cup holder...

I really don't know how it happened. It was latched closed when I parked the car, then this morning it was just open and would not latch closed again. So, I just put the cover on her, turned my back, and just walked away wiping tears from my eyes... Kind of like putting down yer favorite dog...

I agree... unless you are one of the ones that find the cupholder useful as designed.

Call me crazy...but I like my cup holder and use it all the time. It's usually just me that drives my car, and it works great for my coffee and soda. It's never bothered me in the least and I wouldn't want to convert it to a storage bin... in my husband's car his storage bin is a dumping ground for gum wrappers, small change, paper clips, miscellaneous crud...hence, I am the one who drives my car...(ha).

Sorry to hear your broke...I'd probably get it repaired...don't fret too much...it's fixable!!

Mine stopped working as well. I do use it on occasion and have no problem with it holding my drinks.

Got some industrial strength velcro (designed to stick to porous surfaces) and applied a small strip to the front edge and another to the front lip. It is a little stiff opening, but it no longer opens by accident when I brush it with my elbow.

BTW replacing it would cost about $100 plus the time ripping the console apart. Total cost for the velcro $2.99.

Does this qualify for family leave? BigPapa, maybe you just want to consider using it to put a flower in it like the beetle.

of course people with automatics don't mind the cupholder. they're arm doesn't have to pop it up every 2 seconds. i broke mine about 3-4 months ago. my story's just like big papa's. i just got in and it wouldn't close, so i tore it out. ever since, i've been loving my car. so much nicer to shift without being stabbed in the arm by overpriced plastic. although, i have a large, crappy gash in the middle of the armrest, it's the best thing that ever happened. i'll eventually replace it with the storage bin. after all, i don't drink in the car anymore. my carpet is almost 50% dr. pepper anyway because of the cupholder. it cut right through paper and styrofoam.

I got home late last night and my wife starts out with the 100 questions on why the XF is in the garage with the cover on it... So I tell her the long story of the broken cup holder, putting the cover back on the XF and just walking away all teary eyed. She gives me a big hug and tells me to think of it in a new way, like a cup holder on Viagra! It may go down but it keeps popping right back up!! I just love that lady!! She can always bring a smile to my face! I feel so much better about the broken cup holder now. I may just leave it that way for a while... LOL.

Premature deployment can be caused by the following factor, the base of the cup holder assembly is no longer level. Take your deployed member and gently pull back on it, you may get a light thunk or pop. An early symptom of this is visible when you stow the holder and the front will not sit flush with the rest of the trim and will actual be slightly lower. Try it...
If BigPapa keep this up, we're going to have to cal the Waaambulance.
