Premium Fuel or Regular Unleaded?
Hi yall!
A month ago when I purchased my '05 Crossfire "ragtop" the dealer told me that I needed to exclusively run premium fuel in the car. In the past I have had conversations with mechanics, a car guy on the radio and even a chemical engineer or two. All of them agree that the higher octane fuel is unnecessary because the on board computer will retard the timing if I run the lower octane and that I would not see a big decrease in performance. I use to own a Corvette and ran the regular unleaded fuel with no problems.
I just had the other woman in the shop for hesitation coming from a stand still. The technician at the dealership said there was nothing he could find wrong and that no codes were showing up.
Could the hesitation I felt be a result of the lower octane fuel?
Your expert opinions and will be helpful.
Thanks,

My father-in-law is notorious for not running premium in his cars (Buick Park Avenue Ultra (Supercharged) for instance). Constantly had hesitation and ended up with some major engine problems.
My '97 Prelude called for Premium and that's all i ever put in it. 130,000 trouble free miles and then we out grew it.
Just my .02
Agree, about the premium. You can do a search, and find a lot of information on this topic.
Here's one of the threads, but there's more.

Here is another, but about Octane Boosters; but it really the same thing higher Octane levels produce better performance, cleaner internal engine components, reduced ping/knocks, hesitations, and etc. etc. etc.!

If you can't afford the price of premium, sell the efen car and buy a moped so you can buy regular gas...
Assuming when you fill up you take 16 gallons of fuel, this will cost you an extra $3.20, not worth taking a chance for that difference in price. This reminds me of my father who will drive across the river to St. Louis because the gas is usually 10 to 12 cents cheaper per gallon. I told him he is not saving that much if any considering it is approximately a 23 mile round trip and his car gets about 17 mpg.
DT: at the risk of starting a bad thread here, oh what the hell. Learn to spell you jack ***! No one said I can not afford to buy the high octane fuel. Maybe you should have kept your poc filled face out of the plastic bag with glue in the bottom and paid more attention in school.

I can tell you from experience Octane levels do matter, no matter what the cynics or so called experts say. Stick with the 93 Octane (premium) till you go for the ECU Upgrade; but then that would be another XFI saga that you should experience yourself!
