Default Oil checking feature

I know I have to manually check the oil, but I do like the feature that it will tell you the oil level in the car. Unfortunately, can not figure out how to get that function to work on the car I just bought. I have read the manual, but I must be missing something, because I don't see what the manual is telling me I should see. Is there any (Crossfire for dummies) one that might be able to give me some help with this?

When you first get into the car turn your key to the on position just before you turn it to start, you will see the oil symbol appear where the miles are, when you do hit the left button twice that should do it.
If your car was running you need to sit for about 5 min with engine off before you can check it.
