Default Cost of Ownership

All, I've been looking at the Crossfire ever since it came out and love it. Now that they may be discontinued I want to get a new one before they are all gone.

What is the cost to own? What type of repairs have owners seen and what was the cost? Are dealers capable of servicing this car?

I've been looking at this forum to try and determine this.

Thanks in advance...

Warning: This post may not be what you want to hear, but I am in no way sorry I bought my Crossfire, even
tho I paid full MSRP when they came out in 2003.

Is the Crossfire expensive to maintain? In one word, yes.

Premium 91 octane fuel is required, so you’ll pay more at the pump.

Tires can run between $975 for Goodyear F-1 Eagles up to $1,200 for the OEM Michelin Pilot Sport 2’s that
come on the car.

Oil changes are expensive because the Crossfire uses 8.5 quarts of Mobil 1 0W/40 synthetic oil. The OEM fleece
filter goes for about $21. My dealer charges $130 for an oil change. You can do it yourself for about $75,
depending on the price you pay for the oil and filter. On the flip side, you can go 7k-8k miles between oil changes,
so that spreads the cost out over a longer period of time than if you changed oil every 3k miles.

Most parts have to be ordered, as dealers don’t have much of an inventory for these cars. And, you pay Mercedes-Benz
prices which = $$$.

I haven’t had any repairs done other than warranty work, so I can’t answer your question on that. But, the lack of parts
and having to pay MB prices, it would be fair to say cost of repairs would be higher than your average car.

Dealer service… that my friend, opens a can of worms and it depends on who you talk to. IMO a few owners here have
found good service. I would say, the majority of owners are not so satisfied with the service they get from Chrysler
dealerships. Remember, this is a German built car and most mechanics at the dealerships don’t have much training on them.

I don’t mean to scare you off from buying a Crossfire, but you must really want one and accept that it will be more expensive
to own and operate than your average American or Japanese made vehicles.

The upside, they are one of a kind and you don’t see that many on the road. They are fun to drive and turn heads where ever
you go. Also, you can pick up a new $35,000 Crossfire for almost half of what the sticker says if you do your homework before
going to buy one. The 330 hp SRT-6 version, is a little more expensive, but probably the best bang for the $$$ if you’re interested
in a really fast car...

You also have to keep this car clean and waxed constantly... And the MODS aren't cheap either.
Do I recommend you buy a Crossfire? YES!
It's not the most practical car but it is the best deal out there if your looking for a fun sports car with a lot of style.

I'll second that, I wash mine every 2 to 3 days and wax it every week. Can't stand a dirty car, especially a dirty nice car.

ben47 is correct and pretty much covered all the bases. If you buy the crossfire look at it as if you were purchasing a sport coupe from Mercedes, BMW, or any other european auto manufacture... except... with shoddy american service centers. However on a positive note after going through one dealership I found a second one that is tremendously helpful and fair so its just hit and miss depending on where you live as to whether you can find a reliable mechanic. Furthermore if you are at all mechanically inclined the basic service for this car... oil changes, filter changes, etc. are very simple and easy to do yourself. By doing this you can save yourself over half of dealer costs. Good luck! Trust me... from what I have seen most people who make the leap and purchase an XFire don't regret it, I certainly don't and love my car!

Insurance for the Crossfire is relatively inexpensive for a sports car.

Also, many owners haven't spent money on repairs even if something has gone wrong since many Crossfires are still covered by the Basic or Powertrain warranty. Of course, there have been many poor service experiences. So far I've had my Crossfire for 3.5 years, 14K miles, and have spent around $250 for the first two services (consisting mainly of the oil changes). I spent another $60 replacing the tire sealant bottle (which I never plan to use again - makes more sense to carry a tire plug kit). Other than basic car care items like a car cover and wax I haven't spent anything else. I don't foresee any major expenses for at least the next 3.5 years (the remainder of the powertrain warranty- came with all '04 and '05 non-SRT Crossfires).
