Default Cost to hold the XFire

Sorry for making alot of posts guys, I just really love this car, and can't wait to get mine in a few months. I'm trying to figure out the amount of money it takes to maintain this car. I will get one with a warranty, but i'm talking about non-warranty issues. Please list all you can think of, even to the minimal issues, with prices. Thanks again guys.

Oil change: dealer ~ $120; yourself ~ $50.
Tires: $800 - the sky.
Insurance: you should be able to find that.
MPG: ~ 20-30
Taxes, tags etc: you should be able to find that.
Fun driving it: PRICELESS!!!

Basically, plan on it being expensive in comparison to a 'normal' domestic or Japanese car in every respect. It has weird everything. Weird tires. Weird oil. Weird filters. Weird engine.

That being said, unless you're truly counting pennies, it's worth every extra one that it costs to maintain. And all the toys you'll want to buy for it. It's just really fun to own one.

Don't forget depreciation. Unless you pony up a good downstroke, you'll be upside-down in that loan for a long while... Unless the values start back up, which is unlikely in the short term. So if need arises, bailing out might prove to be difficult.

Maybe too much if you need to ask. A good rule of thumb, if a car costs you 20% or more of your monthly income per month, look elsewhere.

I wonder if values will stabilize at some point--or at least slow their descent. With only 1200 new left to sell and with the glut of 05's finally worked through the auction system (according to Tod K). I'm currently talking to 2 dealers about a roadster (yeah in early winter in Ohio), but neither will get 20K for their CPO car. For the price of a new econobox, I can drive an 18 month used luxury roadster with 6.5 years of powertrain coverage and 1.5 years of bumper to bumper--not far off new econo warranty. But in 5 years, my Crossfire should be worth quite a bit more than an 07 econobox. And I had a great time with it. Sure, parts/labor cost more, but its do-able.

That's not to say I would buy because its a great investment, but someone buying in today isn't going to take the depreciation hit of a buyer in 04 who paid close to sticker.

Yep, I agree with Dan above. The '04 has cost me nothing but oil changes & filters & tires. Even after taking a deer whacking last year I've had nothing else break on this car. 56K & counting until she's sold.

It's a car. Guaranteed you will lose money. It is not an investment. But the fun factor is worth a lot. Buy it, enjoy it, then sell it. Mine puts a smile on my face every single time I drive it. That is worth something. I drove a Honda for 3 years, and it was a cheap car to drive. But it was dull.

The Xfire is an outstanding deal. drive it, beat it like you stole it. Life's too short to drive boring cars.

Most people regret things they didn't do. Buy the crosssfire and smile. You deserve it!

Selling it to buy something else? If so, what?

Hey there CGO!

Nah, when I bought my SRT & tried to trade in my Coupe the dealer offered me 11K. Sorry, ain't happening. As much as I'd love to keep both cars (& the wife would agree) I'm a working stiff & I HATE carrying 2 car payments. Problem is: winter is great time to buy a car, a lousy time to sell one. I've had a couple of hits but no success yet. Looks like I'll be holding onto it until spring. Que sera sera!

there is actually a warranty i think its $2500 regular price which covers the car to 100k miles and takes care of all maitenance, including things like brake pads and oil changes, trans flush if auto, radiator flush..... if your worried about the cost of maintenance this might be a good idea so you wont be shelling it out when it comes due. just take it to the stealership and they take care of it. the warranty is financable and transferable. but i can only see this paying off if you kept it for a min. of 3 years of daily driving or longer. and that all depends on the financing as well. good luck with your purchase!

The XFire is lower maintenance and they don't break down as much either.

I've had mine for a year from 5,000 to 21,000 miles and so far I've....
  • adjusted passenger side window (warranty)
  • fixed driver's side heated seat (warranty), but the passenger side went out after warranty so screw it
  • replaced radiator fan not covered under recall (They charge $400 for just the fan, but I replaced whole shroud with an aftermarket one by myself for around $125)
  • Oil changes cost me $80 but I get family discount at the dealer
  • I need to replace driver's side door speaker ($???)
