Default Rear Tire Suggestions!

Hey, guys! I need some new rear tires for my '05 Crossfire Coupe Limited to replace the existing Michelin Pilot Sports. I'm not replacing the front tires just the rear tires. I would like to get something cheaper than the Michelins but I don't want crap tires. I've read some threads here about the Goodyear F1 Eagles. Should I go with All Seasons? I live in FL. Suggestions?

I love my Goodyear F1 A/S, but i'm in Michigan where we get CRAZY weather.

Also, can you really replace your back tires with different tires then your front tires !?? Won't that cause problems?!

If you do not want to spend much and have a good set of tires for the money, try the Kumho Ecsta SPT
You can find them at www.tirerack.com

Good luck

It's not much of a problem as long as it's both backs or both fronts. The real problems start when you replace only one tire or both on one side of the car.

The biggest issue with replacing the rears with a different tire is the level of grip in a corner. If you have really sticky tires in the front and really hard tires in the back you can have a "loose" condition, the rear end wants to slide out. If you have the opposite, sticky in the rear and hard in the front, the car will seem "tight", it'll want to go straight when you turn the wheel and give it the gas.

As long as the tires in front and the tires in the rear have a similar treadwear rating and level of grip you should be alright.

Made by General Tire, which is Continental's generic brand. Not much difference from any other all-season tire, but this is NOT a performance tire.

Compared to a pair of Michelin Pilot Sports or Contisports, it's a joke, but it will keep you rolling on a budget if that's what you need.

Please don't tell me you're going to ask about regular unleaded, and 10w30 non synthetic oil next.

Apkano, we are talking about tires here, right?
Yes, you can certainly match sets of tires, they don't have to be the same front to back. Both Apkano & I are running with the F1's but being in Florida I don't know if All-Season's would be appropriate or useful. They work just fine up here in Snowland.

Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't the Goodyears quite a bit more expensive than the Michelin's? That said they are a harder compound and would last a lot longer. I have just over 7000 miles on my Michelins and they are about half done.

Your choice of General UHP tires is an excellent one. If you decide to go this way you would have to down size to 245/35x19. The important thing to understand about this summer tire is it sticks like glue, gives a compliant ride and has good tread life. I have yet to have one flat spot in the cold. If you decide to go this way understand that a summer tire tracks much faster than an AW tire. So as long as you get front and rear or you have summer tires already on the front you will be okay. Do not run summer tires on the back only. There will be a very good chance that the rear of your car will end up in the front. As a footnote; this tire was rated # 1 on Tirerack for over one and a half years. Also downsizing will throw your speedometer off by a little. At 100mph you will be going 99mph. Small price to pay for such a great tire.

Kumho tires are good tires. They are sticky and have a good tread life. They've become very respected among car guys.

Hey now, the general makes some good cheapy tires, but on a track day don't expect the flexy sidewalls and hard-compound rubber to make you happy.

Okay, my turn now. I will stand in defense of the General Exclaims. I have a set on my car and have put a little over 30K miles on them and they are starting to wear down. I figure I have at most 10K left in them. They have stuck like glue on the drag track, on the shifter cart track, and on the street. Not to mention they made it through two winters now. I am using a size 265/30 in the back and am about to order another pair but going to go with a 275/30 this time. Love the tire and you can't beat the performance for the price. I have pulled over a lateral G on these (at least thats what my comp tech gauge said lol) No issues, love them, great in the rain as well. If it were me, I would try them out, for the price, they still can not be beat.

Dougs

Found some General Exclaim's @ 255/35-19, so I won't need to change the tire size. Thanks for your input.

The Goodyears and Michelin's are way too expensive. Although great tires and admittedly better than the General's, they are just too much for what I am looking for. No drag racing, street racing, or impressin' the girlfriend here. I need a tire that is going to last longer than the Michelin's. Let's face it, the Michelin's tread life sucks. The General's are a better price and I can do two brand new ones for the price of one Michelin. Sorry to disappoint all you high performance guys out there, but I do appreciate the feedback from everyone. The General's are rated #1 in the ultra high performance category.

Oh crap, I guess I need to start putting premium fuel and synthetic oil in my car.

Your going to be pleasantly surprised. These will, by far, out perform the OEM tire.

I'll third it for the Kumho Ecsta SPT, a very good "Summer" tire, at a Dirt Cheap Price!

Tire Rack give high ratings to the General Exclaims and their price is very low. I've had excellent service from them. Ordered my wheels on a Monday afternoon and had them before 10 am Wednesday.
