Default Oil Filter question

Had my Xfire serviced at the dealer today. Just the normal stuff, state inspection, head light replacement, seat heater replacement, LOF.
They put in an AC-DELCO PF2247G cellulose oil filter for $17.77.

I bought the real fleece filter for $18 from an MB parts site.

My question is, can I replace the oil filter without draining the oil?
Looks like the filter is at about the highest point on the engine, so I think so, but would like some input before I make a mess of my driveway.

I have a top-sider just in case.

Kurt

Shouldn't be a problem. It's right there on top up front. Chances are you won't even have to top of the oil. All the oil that is soaked into the paper filter would probablly add up to a couple of ounces.

Slightly loosen the filter cap enough to break the suction (clear the o-ring) and wait 5 minutes to let ALL the oil drain out of the cap volume.

It's no problem.
I changed mine to a fleece between oil changes.
When the engine is cold from overnight I changed mine with no mess at all.

Great advice.

I actually crack the seal after I've pulled the plug out of the pan for a complete oil change.......then I let it sit and drain overnight.
