tinted windows what % tint
Ok, here's the newby in me: Can someone explain what the percentages mean and how they add?
Is it the amount of light that comes through or something else?
Thanks.

Valkryderguy, Huh? Do you have me mixed up with someone else? To what are you referring? Not sure I get it. Herb
I think tinting looks good on this car. It works with the chopped look of the side windows.
thanks in advance to everyone for the help and photo's. Really nice examples. I've made my mine up to go with it.

I've written hundreds of citations for it, and EVERY ONE of them has held up in court.
Also, when you are pulled over by the police to talk about your tint, don't be surprised if you are asked out of your car at gunpoint.
We don't like approaching a car that we can't see what's going on inside of.
Not legal here in Florida, but I am running 2 layers of tint...20% base layer with a 5% top layer. Got a ticket from the Casselberry P.D. They did a light meter test, I am running at a 1% light reading. I am also running an 8" strip on the windshield, which is not legal here either, but it help keeps the car cool.
Nick
It is the percentage of light the propagates through the window. Layers multiply. If you start with the factory tint of 70% and add a 30% layer you get 21%. 0.7 x 0.3 = 0.21
In Mutt's case 0.7 x 0.2 x 0.05 = 0.007 less than 1%

i had 3 options:
1- pay ticket, no points $76.00 (i did this one)
2- remove tint, have police officer sign off and pay a $9.00 fix-it warning
3- go to court and fight it
When i got the ticket i was speeding. The cop came up to my window, but i opened the door instead of rolling my window down cause i just had the windows tinted 2 days prior. He didnt like me opening the door, so i told him why and he went an got his light meter from the squad car. You install the window edge between the 2 points on the meter and it gives a reading. Like kurtis said in an earlier post, the meter kept flipping between 0 and 1%. he opted to give me a tint ticket instead of a speeding ticket which was cool. Had i not been speeding, i doubt i would have gotten pulled over strictly for tint, but now when i see a cop i do drop both windows real quick-just in case.

Hey Valk, I am a cop, we don't mess w/ tinting enforcement here very much, but, and a big but...we will ask you to get out of the car at night if we can't see in, and depending on what you were stopped for, maybe, just maybe my hand will be on my Glock...how would you like approaching a blked out van at 3 in the morning? Can't say you ever get used to it, I've been doin' it 30 yrs, now tell me where the ntrikit's post are, can't believe you banned someone, go Valk.....
Nope. He got banned for Rick Rolling in pointless posts that were already in the tubes. But meh...who cares, right? I doubt he cares much. Everyone has a bad day at times, even message board moderators. We'll give Valk a mulligan. He's entitled to a "D'OH" every now and then.
Now...back to the topic. Tinting your car is just asking for trouble in some states. Why give the LEO a free reason to pull you over? You want to be out on the town for a nice dinner date and have the local police pull you over to talk about tint?

His real name is Steve Guttenberg
Yeah, we're all a bunch of stuffy old men who never take our badges off. We do not have social lives like everyone else. And lastly....we NEVER enjoy a good old fashioned Rick Rolling.
For those of you who still have this misconception of LEO's, come on over and chat with us at CopTalk. You'll soon see that we are just like everyone else. Our badges come off at night.
