I wouldn't mind a shorter throw.

the sport c320 has the short throw shifter, and so does the crossfire, but I think renntec made a custom shifter a long time ago.

If you want a shorter throw you need a new ****, this way you can lower the hight.

We offer a Lower Lighter MOMO CF/Leather ****. It makes the shift less effortless.

Check it out: http://www.tvtdesign.com/inc/sdetail/375

To my knowledge there are no short shift kits like in a Mustang.

i personally think the throws are short enough... the only thing that could be better is a smoother shift.

Take the current shifter out, cut out the desired amount and then weld it (stiffeners if necessary, or an outer tube) it wil all be hidden by the boot (unless you have an auto tranny).

Six spped is a new breed for me. Took a while to figure that it always wants to go to center which is 3rd and 4th. 2nd gear is an uncomfortable pull for me, seems to be into my hip instead of straight back. Oh well, just an old 4 speed guy that is having a blast with his Crossfire.

I agree, the throw is short enough. And as far as smoothness goes: It gets better over time. If this is the same as all the other MB gearboxes (and I have no reason to believe otherwise) the gearbox gets better and better until you are at about 30k miles. I have 7000 now on our Xfire in the last two months and it is already remarkably better than on day one.

I too think the throw is pretty good i would like a more precise shifter the stock shifter is very spongy not a good shifter when it comes to quick shifts.I here what you are saying about the 2nd gear i keep ending up in 4th instead of 2nd

When you say that, do you mean that there is no way to make the shifts smoother and less clunky, and no way to put a sort of "stopper" at the end of the shift?

I like to shift a little hard, and it always worries me what would happen if i pushed the shifter into the gate too hard, because older and more experienced drivers have told me that it isn't good.

Well, the shifter is a little different than the shifter you'd find connected to a Tremec.

On a Tremec like you find on a mustang, the lever is actually attached to the transmission. The XF has a parallelogram linkage that pushes and pulls on the main shift rod. Then there is a selector cable that's activated when you go left to right, along with a reverse lockout box.

The selector is very short throw (the left/right motion on the shifter between 1-2, 3-4, and 5-6) but you are right, there is room for work on getting the shifter to move a shorter distance front to back.

The solution unfortunately isn't a "stopper", as the shift distance is necessary to move the synchros from one gear to another. Stopping the shift "short" would cause grinding or incomplete engagement.

What's necessary is to basically increase the lever arm between the shifter and the main shift rod/fork. It's possible. Maybe some enterprising fellow can engineer one.

Like a fine wine it does get better with time. I too am finding the shifting to improve with time. I have 15000 on mine.

that's what I was afraid of...

Just for clarification, it is bad to push the shifter too far forward into the gate, right?

the actual shifter **** for the manual transmission is a specially designed for the car because of the reverse proceudre...not easily duplicated.

I'm at 28k and have not seen much difference in "smoothness". I think that after I get used to driving it again each spring, I just shift a little better. But I am hoping over the next 10k it smoothes out a little and is not a notchy between 1st and 2nd.

PS - I usually shift 4th to 6th as 5th doesn't do much for me. That's a "long" shift.

The **** really has nothing to do with that. You can fit any **** on these cars that you want. The MOMO ones we offer are not made to fit this car, but we modify them so that they do.

**** design is more important in an auto then a manual.
