Default Lower grill section?

I would like to paint or purchase lower grilles in silver, not chrome, to match the trim on the rest of the car. Simply spray painting them will not work because part of the grilles are blocked off.

Anyone try to 'roll' paint on just the top layer? I don't think I can do it by brush now-a-days.

I am looking for something like this, just the blocked off areas to remain black:

I recall someone did the edges only a year or two ago and posted pictures. A little searching should get you there.

There was a thread about this back in ~ November 2007. He actually milled out the bottom of the blocked off portion and used a paint pen to do the tops of the "x"'s

Sorry, you'll have to search for it.

I will try a search, thanks.

My first thought is to scuff, degrease, and then paint the entire assembly with etching primer for good adheision. Then two light coats of silver. After completely dry, using an eye dropper, I can fill in the blanks with black. Then completely clear coat the entire piece.

Any other ideas?

James

Just pop em out and paint em your desried color. I have changed the color of both upper and lower grilles at least four times. It's rather easy. Just take your time when spraying. Plus there a inserts available for either grille via this site, ebay or ctd.

Today I got through phase one. Painted the black with an eye dropper after the silver was applied. I had some 'wheel' silver and it was too dark too match the rest of the car. So I went over them with regular bright silver. Matched very close to the rest of the trim on the car.

Tomorrow I am going to clear coat them with "Satin" so the black isn't so shiney and will not stand out from the openings. A little touch up before the clear and they will be ready to go...

I got the lowers back on the car today, but no sunshine to get some good shots. More to come...
