Default Old trick for chrome

I was getting My xfire ready for one of our St Lois group meets. The "06 car though "new" when I bought it, had sat for more than a year in the dealer lot. Lots of work to get the shine back.

I had all the stuff from Meguiars for paint and trim and seats and tires. But the stubborn rust on the tail pipes just wouldn't budge with anything I had in my arsenal.

Wd- 40 wouldn't budge it, Basin Tub and Tile wouldn't either. I was just about to get the steel wool when I remembered an old trick from the fifties. Back when chrome was really chrome on steel, we used to spiff the bumpers and trim up with ....Aluminum foil. So I got a piece out and wadded it up.

Rubbed the rust right out and the aluminium filled in the pits. Looks good as new.

Sorry, I don't have pictures but I do have witrnesses. Works great and cheap too.
So is the advice,.....

dissimilar metal contact, the pitting attracts itself to the aluminum. Plus the aluminum is softer than the chrome so it won't scratch

Yes this trick was on the TV show Mythbusters. The only difference was that they used it with Coca-Cola.

You're right. It's great stuff. I first started using nevr dull in basic training. I just used some to polish my door sills.

Never dull works fine, if you have some.
I have at least twenty bottles of "stuff" for cleaning and waxing my cars.
Some is old and useless, some was useless when it was new. Nothing on hand for solving the rust on my pipes.
I'm an old cheap Indian who was just too lazy to go to the store.

Foil worked fine and a lot cheaper. It won't go bad on the shelf and is always available in the kitchen.

Just thought I'd pass it on.

Don't use WD 40 and Aluminum foil for leftovers. Leaves a funny taste especially if you warm your stuff up on the grill.
