Strange "thump" when I come to a stop after driving at high speeds
Strange "thump" when I come to a stop after driving at high speeds
I've asked around and nobody else seems to have heard the noise that I hear every time I pull down an exit ramp after driving some distance at highway speed. The sound is a dull thud, like someone hitting a rear quarter panel with their fist. It happens within 60 seconds of my decelerating to a stop. The first time it happened, I thought that someone had hit me. After the first few times, I figured it was just the wing parking itself in the down position, but I ruled that out when the noise happened on a freeway trip where the wing had not deployed. Furthermore, I don't think that it is the gasoline sloshing around in the tank. I'm stumped.
Anytime someone new rides in my car, they jump when they hear the bump. I've gotten used to it, but want to make sure that it's not something that I should have the dealership look in to.

This was a search with "strange noise" as the search words.

You can lock the wing in the "up" position to eliminate it as the source of noise.
Your description says it happens 60 seconds after stopping. If it happened just as you stopped, I'd suspect something rolling in the trunk or where the spare tire would go.
Other than that - no guesses. I assume you have an automatic and not a manual.

is the sound coming from the passenger side-rear? if so, it is the emissions valve shut off.

Thanks to all for the explanation. I tried a search before I posted, but I didn't search for the right phrase. The "strange noise" thread seems to describe what I am hearing. At least I know that it is normal. Thanks for giving me one less thing to worry about.

Goldwing what year was that spare tire well offered?
Towncrier check your suspension, calipers and your exhaust. One of these components are most likely your culprit.
Re: Strange "thump" when I come to a stop after driving at high speeds
I was also hearing a thump from my driver side at odd times for about a week after I got my car until I realized that the driver side window was not always completely shut. There was probably less than 1/8" gap where the top rear corner of the window was catching on the rubber above it.
It would tend to 'slap' shut sometimes and I was left wondering what the heck was happening. It was hard to notice from outside the car at first.
Probably not related to your concern but there you go.

Re: Strange "thump" when I come to a stop after driving at high speeds
When I had a similar thump mine got progressively worse, QUICKLY. I took it to the Chrysler dealer, and it turns out I had some severely degraded bushings in my rear suspension. This ended up bending one of my rear control arms. I thought it was all pretty strange as the car only had 40k on it at the time (just out of the warranty period naturally). The whole repair bill was close to $900. Keep an eye and ear on that thump... it could be something very serious.
