Just Read the SLK 300 Marketing Materials
OK, I know that I would probably be singing a different tune if I just dropped $55K on a new 2009 Mercedes SLK 300, but after reading the materials about the vehicle, I'm just sitting here shaking my head.

Roughly the same engine power/torque/0-60
Pretty much the same layout
Creature Electronics pretty much the same (given my upgrades)
styling not as nice as Crossfire (though the front end is interesting)
I figure I have $40K still in my net worth somewhere and am having $55K worth of fun with the car I have.
I'm about 300% sure I will never convince an SLK 300 owner of this but it strikes me that it's mainly because he didn't have to go to the Sprinter site and buy a stick-on Mercedes-Benz badge - he just ponied up the extra $40K and got one with a free car!
Damn I love my Crossfire...

Who knows. That SLK makes no sense to me compared to a Porsche Cayman or a Z4 M Coupe. But then again, it is the only car in its class that has the folding hardtop. Well, besides the SC430. So I just contradicted myself. So there we go, you're right, there's no point to it

Other then the similar power. The SLK 280/300 and Crossfire are night and day. Take a ride in one and you'll change your mind real quick.
The new SLK 350 should give the SRT 6 a run for its money.

I would take one of those over a crossfire any day
At that point I think it's more of luxury with power, rather then just power.
Because think of it.. do you really consider a crossfire to be luxury?

Compared to the interior of an S2000, 350Z, Saturn Sky, Pontiac Solstice, or a Mazda Miata, the Crossfire is much quieter and well built.
It's not quite up to Audi, Infiniti, Lexus, Aston Martin, or BMW standards, but the Crossfire is up there.

Not exactly in my budget though.

I must be in the wrong Crossfire
lol i agree i think you actually have to compete with luxury cars to make that a valid point. a s2000, 350z, saturn sky and mazda miata are not ANYWHERE close to luxury. so your comparing our car to a whole bunch of sports cars

What is it then?
Are you saying that an R170 SLK is not a "luxury car"? Was it a luxury car when it was sold in 2003?
I love my SRT-6. I know without a doubt that I have a very hot car (Sports Car = YES, Luxury Car = YES, Everything else = YES). And then suddenly, while standing there talking to the MB service tech asking HOW TO best replace a very expensive supercharger, in rolls a doctor in his new 2009 SL63 AMG. Luxury suddenly takes on a whole new meaning. There is this line about the grass is always greener.....
But then, I get back into my SRT-6 and realize that Life is Pretty Damn Good.
Even with a busted SC. More on that later.
There will always be something newer, hotter, faster, prettier. We must never stop appreciating just how good we all have it driving a Crossfire. Except for all you 07 Limited, SRT wannabe types. Dream on.

Looking at this new SLK.. that is luxury to me. I know this is say.. 4 years model difference (my 2005 to that 2009) .
But let's look at it.. hardtop convertible, HID's, convertible operation from your keyfob, iPod / mp3 player integration, a navigation system that is superior instead of ours that blows harder then anything, airscarf, bluetooth integration.
in our crossfire all i notice is the million #((@#* creaks and rattles from our ridiculous plastic interior.
i absolutely love my crossfire, and of course they're a lot cheaper then this new MB, but i would take the MB over the crossfire any day.

I closed the gap between the cars by making some changes to mine. And some things were taken care of for me. For example I prefer the coupe design so that's a plus to me. Second the wheels and tires - I prefer the larger 18/19 wheels over the Mercedes 17" all around.
Then there's the navigation and electronics. I have never been impressed by OEM stereo and after getting fleeced by purchasing the OEM "VES"/Navigation system for my Jeep Commander Overland, I can safely say the OEM Navigation systems are way overpriced for what you get and amazing for some of the things you don't get. In the end, there isn't a car I have owned that offered a sound/nav system worth having. I fixed that with the Crossfire and feel the sound system I put in offers all the cool stuff in the SLK 300. And I am pretty sure my navigation solution goes beyond the OEM unit in the Benz.
The one thing the Benz does have that I think is cool is that it (optionally) can self-notify when it has been stolen and report its own position. Lo-Jack eat your heart out.
But again, there's a lot of money still in my wallet that the Benz would take away from me, for not a lot of value-added benefit. Hell, I have enough money left to go buy an SRT! If I could get it past the accountant...
SLK 300 - awesome car, would love to have it, but by changing some things in the Crossfire, I'm very happy with the grass on my side of the fence...
There's just something about the XF that grabs you when you look at it or drive it. Don't know what it is but it gets you going in the morning.
