Ash tray will not stay in
I had trouble with my sticking closed and then it started working fine. When I pulled all the console out to have it painted I found a dime under the ashtray. I dont store coins in my ashtray and dont use the coin holder so it was likely from the previous owner. Point is, it dosent work well if things get under or behind it.

hi,
My car's ashtray also does not stay closed. I found in another topic how to remove the console to reach the back however I could not do that (I was trying to pull out the front cover but afraid of breaking it). Got it to a dealer and they asked for almost $300 to replace the whole bottom part. Don't like to see anything malfunctioning but don't want to spend that money. Any suggestion?

The mechanism is simple, when you push the ashtray back it clicks into it's lock, and when you push again it reverses, using a spring to bring it back out, just like the cupholder. Similar to a click pen
I wouldn't buy the part from the stealership, get a much better buy here, junkyard, ebay, etc. I just got a used cupholder off a member for shipping costs. Sure beat the $190 the stealership wanted.
It goes all the way back but no click. It was told me in the dealer that the mechanism is broken but it is so hard to reach the back to check this out. I wish I have the skill to do it by myself...

Still put some new GS-D3's on order though. If no one else does, I will go look at mine so I can better describe how to check it tomorrow morning. For both of you
I just recieved a used one from e-bay. I e-mailed one of the people selling parts off the totalled crossfires that are listed on there. Only cost me 20 bucks and the part looks really good.
