Default Solution to window water leak...

I had the car 4 years with no problems and lots of heavy rains (Texas is known for wacky weather). Lately I have been getting a few drips of water from the top of the passenger window and falling right on the door by the triangle. I ran the hose there today and it was leaking! The water is somehow getting in through the top of the wondow and running down the inside of the rubber molding. When it gets near the triangle, it runs out of the rubber track and on to my door.

I used a dollar bill and can tell the top window is not as well sealed as the driver side. The dollar bill has just a little resistance but easily slides out. You can tell the difference when I do that test on the driver door. It looks like I may just need a window adjustment, both the pitch and height. You can tell it wasn't adjusted correctly from the factory. I am taking it to a dealer tomorrow for an adjustment.... don't know what is worse... the dealer or a water leak!

Anyone else experience this same problem or is it just me! Wind noise or water leak?

By the way, I saw a mint Karmann Ghia today on the road! Absolutely amazing. I have seen quite a few in my area... I even pass a junk yard and there is an old beat up Ghia sitting in the front waiting to be restored. I hope our cars one day become legends too!

I have the wind noise and I have not noticed any water. It is the passenger side and I intend to do it myself. There is a TSB on this issue, but I do not think it is too hard to do yourself, it is a matter of tilting the glass so that it hits the seal a little harder.

I don't hear any wind noise (it might be there but I don't hear it as a driver--- I am never a passenger)... I just have the water leak. I can clearly see a difference between my driver and passenger window. The passenger window clearly needs a pitch and height adjustment. I am just too afraid to touch it and do it myself. I did the dollar bill test and it slides out more easily on the passenger window.

I am sorry for all the posts on this issue. Everyone has been a major help. Someone even sent me the link to the TSB's and I will print it up and bring it tomorrow. It says on the TSB there could be wind noise or water leak.

My window hasn't leaked in 4 years. I am guessing the door and window just don't close as tightly as they used to.

Wonder if the rubber seal has shrunk? Mines coming up on 4 years this July and KOW no leaks. I know what you mean about the dealer. I have a few issues and I am very hesitant to take it in. So far they have been ok but now that I have the Carbon Fiber dash, and several of the issues are dash related I'm hesitant. Good luck with this, I hope you have no problems!

Mine leaks. Not in the rain, but when I wash the car & squirt it with a hose sideways. I put some rubber reconditioning stuff on it. maybe it'll work.

My window is clearly not up high enough or angled correctly. The dealership is working on it and told me it is an issue. When I get it back I will try some rubber reconditioning stuff too. What kind of stuff do you use?

Just got the car back. They adjusted the window but it is still not tucked in like the driver side. It is better though! I tried the dollar test and it is tighter. Time will tell if it is fixed or if I need to bring it back.

Did you fix it yet? Let me know what happens. If my window continues to leak I will just bring it back because it is not 100% correct. At the most, a dealership will charge 100 dollars. I am just too afraid to take the door panel off myself.

I just found that like half an hour ago. Im going to start it tomorrow. But taking the door panel off it wicked easy. I dropped my credit card in there once (don't ask) and its a total of six screws. The hardest part is taking that little plastic cover off the grab handle. But i try it tomorrow and get back to you. I had the dealer try three times and the only thing the managed to do is break the tweeter on the door. Ill do a write up about it with pics and have it on the fourm by tomorrow night.

There's a cheap fix from the Audi forum that may work -- it worked on my A6 but the window seals are a little different. They suggested sliding a length of clear PVC tubing (e.g., 1/4" aquarium tubing) in the groove in the rubber seal. I just checked my SRT6 and the groove is not big enough, but it looks like 3/8" tubing could easily fit in all the way and cause the seal to move outwards, towards the window. You can buy different diameter clear plastic tubing at Lowes, etc. Not sure if this would work, but it may be worth a try.

They better have fixed mine. It looks like they could have done a better job adjusting the window. But I am going to see if it works. If not, it is going back.

I wouldn't do the pipe thing. The problem is the window needs to fit tightly under the top rubber. No water should be getting through the window in that rubber tunnel at all (unless you open the door and a couple drops drip in). They probably put the pipe in the audi because it has auto locking windows and the pipe helps slide the window up in the right place. Our problem is the opposite.

Meguires's Rubber Reconditioner. found some in the garage. Google "rubber reconditioner" & there are a lot of products that might work. Made it look nicer, anyway.

The leaks are because the glass is not aligned properly, a reasonably simple task to accomplish. The rubber is just fine.

I just had the dealer adjust the glass 2 weeks ago. They adjusted the height but not the pitch. It clearly needed the height adjustment! It takes more pressure to close the door and seems to be sealed up tight. But it is still sticking far out on an angle...but I figure I would give it a try before I bring it back to the dealer. I sprayed at the car wash and nothing! It poured on my car all last week and some light rain this week.... in the past it would have leaked but not this time. Just came from the car wash and sprayed heavy water around the window from the side and noticed a few drops. Hopefully it was just the pressure from the do-it-yourself car wash spray gun. I don't mind the water from a car wash but I do mind rain water. What do you think? Think the car will give me trouble next time it rains? Think I need to go back for another adjustment? Or is it time to retire the car as my everyday driver and just take it out on nice days?

Isn't this a door alignment issue, not a window alignment issue?

A door has enormous amounts of alignment potential between the hinges and the latch. The window...not so much.

There is a TSB on this issue, I have the same problem and I intend to fix it myself. I just have to work up the enthusiasm.
The Shop Manual describes how it is done and appears simple enough. Go to page 2951 of the 2004 manual for the adjustments.
I am assuming that the doors are correctly aligned as mine are.

How can I tell if the door is not aligned properly? I always assumed it was the window because it looks out of wack.
