Default A little help from my friends. (Part Deux)

Once upon a time, probably in the last 6-8 years, I came across some information about an insurance company, (or two), that came to the remarkable conclusion that even though a person might have 6-cars, they could only drive one at a time. They therefore had a plan to insure a person just once, (with perhaps a service charge for the extra vehicles), instead of the six times the standard criminal insurance companies were in the habit of doing.
Does anyone have any info on such an insurance company, or know of a company that has a knock-out plan for those folks with multiple cars?
(Reason) My insurance co. just raised my rates because I got one year older this May.
Help me Obewan, you're my only hope.

Well seeing that I work for a standard criminal insurance company and hey you haven't insulted me or I'm sure the other agents that are members of this forum I'll answer your question. What you are talking about is a multicar discount, low mileage discount, some companies offer it, I know the company I work for, Allstate offers it. We also rate you short mileage if you drive under 7500 miles per year. If you drive your car less than 3500 miles per year and you basically drive it to Cruise Ins and car shows then you might want to check out Grundy out of PA. They have certain limitations but in the long run its extremely inexpensive. I pay 243$ a year, full coverage from Grundy. My car is an 05 tha has just over 10k miles on it. I valued it at 16,000$
Insurance rates are high for many reasons but nobody is holding a gun to your head, you have the right to shop. Do you have a young driver on the policy, under 21? Do you have your home and auto with the same company? Special discounts with some companies. How old are you? Your rates really should not go back up til 65, 55-65 is the lowest rates you should see. After 21 your rates should go down unless you have accidents. Tickets in Maryland don't affect an existing policy but can affect your rate when you sign up, Insurance regulation as I said is different in every state.
The place I'd start is with your agent. Ask him specifiaclly why it went up (age?) anything he can do to help you? Look at deductibles , mileage, multicar discounts, multipolicy discounts etc. If that doesn't work for you then start shopping.
Good luck.
By the way I think Progressive was offering a plan that was "pay as you drive" in other words tied into the amount of miles you drive. Please understand Insurance is regulated by your state so what you see available in one state may not be available in yours. I think I just heard the Progressive commercial last week.

not really I had 12 of my AMX's insuranced the first one was lots of money like 600 for 6 months (300 300 w/ 500 duc.)) the additional cars were 50.00 ea to have the same coverage,, no mileage restriction,, then either they stoped selling ins in fl or fl kicked them out because they wouldn't pay off the politicans it was called M.F.A.

I heard that in Washington state YOU are insured, not the cars.
I have 18 cars and of those 6 are insured. If I want to drive one of the others, I drop insurance on one car and start it on another.
Wish "I" was insured so I could drive any of MY cars!

This sounds like one of the "AHAAA" moments. If I only had money to start an insurance company.

To all that were sympathetic/kind enough to answer my query, (especially to patpur), I say thank you. I've received enough info to at least know that somewhere out there in Insurance Land, there may be a new insurance company for me. In explanation,.....Just turned 70 in May, and figured along with "senior discounts", etc., I'd get a better price, (or at least maintain my good rates) on my car insurance.
Surprise! The criminal bastards raised the rates anywhere from 45 to 60 bucks on each car, and that's just enough to REALLY **** ME OFF!
My agent said that it was nothing personal, but just the policy of the company. (My own personal policy is to not accept exploitation lightly).
So, I guess the moral of the story is, when you've finally made it and feel like you've got the world by the *****, along comes the big Seven-Oh and the insurance companies have their way with you, probably because they feel you're too feeble to do anything about it.
They say that old age is not for sissies, so all of you out there that are old enough to remember when milk came in glass bottles should get ready for a very ugly surprise.

I do not have useful comments regarding auto insurance, but under your signature, jimmyjet, I agree wholly with your other insurances; namely your Kimber and your Bushmaster. Damn good insurance.

Regards.

So you are 70. At least with my company you would be getting a higher rate. Why? Older drivers in many cases have a lot more accidents than the 30-65 crowd on average. Not necessarily you but they don't just look at you when they make up the rates. They look at your age group as a whole. Is it fair? Insurance companies in their infinite wisdom have a field day with their predictibility tables. I would shop, you have time. We do as much as we can to get a customers rates down. I don't get paid commission, I'm on a flat salary so it would do me no good to charge a customer more than they should pay. That said I understand your frustration, please understand ours, in some cases we can't do any more with what we are given. Who insures you? Just curious.

I think I'll look into Grundy for next summer. My current company insures my 2005s (cars #5 and #6) for about $600/yr each that includes 100/300/50 and full collision. The last two summers I toyed with dropping the collision and saving 50% of my costs, but then I read the posts about the forum members who are rear ended or hit&run. And, unfortunately, I live in Michigan which is a no-fault state which means some a$$hole can hit me and I'm on the hook for repairs. And we have lots of free range deer looking to run in front of cars running at high speeds on the I-state. I96 is a veritable buffet for crows with all the dead beasties.

Jimmy if it were me I'd look into GEICO. Right now they have some of the best rates out there. I'm not sure how they are in your area but I would start shopping with them. I have never heard of the company you are with but that doesn't mean they aren't a good company. I'd shop until you can find a rate you are happier with. GEICO, Nationwide, Progressive, State Farm all have some pretty great rates right now. I did not include my company because our auto rates right now are not competitive. Allstate may be in your area I don't know. One of the reasons I moved my Crossfire. Allstate was charging me 1200$ a year with a $1000 deductible on collision, 0$ on Comp, 100/300/100. Grundy has the same liability but 0$ deductible on Comp and Collision for 243$ a year. I'm driving less than 3000 miles a year, I think their limit is 3500 and there are other limitations I qualified for, garage kept etc. Give GEICO a try and if you have questions please ask, we ain't the enemy!
Pat
