So I was on my way in "Fred" to look at a 05 SRT6 (13K miles) (was thinking of trading "Wilma" 08 2,800 miles) ....at about 80mph.....tire blows out....275 30/19 Exclaim UHP pierced with what looks like a metal hollow straw??? & tire totaled before I got it stopped....wheel looks OK. So I catch a ride home....jack up Wilma & remove her OEM 255/35 19.....take it back to Fred & drive home slow. Ordered a new Exclaim from Tire Rack...$177 + $19 shipping......



If you can't have a spare tire,,,,you should have a spare Crossfire!!

I was soo with you until I added up the cost of: additional insurance, Excise taxes, another garage, not to mention the cost of Wilma!

THen I said maybe just have another wheel in the garage and save some $$....


...now if money were not an issue, give me two more and maybe three. Heck give me one in every color!

 

Two also come in handy when one is in the shop getting the supercharger replaced!

how did it handle with the blowout? That can be really scary in some cars, glad you and the car made it through the blowout ok.

Front S/C bearing seized after a (VERY) "spirited" 40 mile drive.

 

Wow, i bet that did a number on the supercharger.

 

I keep a spare tire on a wheel at home just in case of that same senario. Cheaper than a second Crossfire, but I know, not as much fun!

 

I just pulled the "metal-straw" out.....you should see this thing....almost 2 inches long....super hard metal.....hollow.......hollow center is 1/8 to 1/4 inch wide....didn't take long for all the air to come out...

I tried the sealant & compressor.....outside of tire looked fine....after no luck I look at the inside of tire......split wide open...shreds.

Glad it didn't happen when I was going 131 back in Dec. !!

At 80, the TPMS warning was of no value with a hole that size .....strong vibration-like it was way out of balance....got stopped within 1/4 mile..I was in the far left lane of I435...a 4 or 5 lane highway. I think the TPMS should have a LOUD audible warning....not just visual!!!!

Wheel looks OK.....? Guess I'll find out for sure when Tire Rack ships the new one.....guess I should have bought the Road-Hazzard Warranty!!

 

Good plan. I never thought of that. I have a spare front wheel (from my encounter with a curb last year). I wonder if I should go ahead and purchase a tire for it. Hmmmm.

 

Sounds like one of those tire spikes the Coppers use to stop the bad guys.

 

I showed it to a neighbor & he thinks it's something used on Caterpillar tracks.....probably fell off when the machine was being carried on a flatbed.

 

What is/was the raplcement cost on that? I know that if you don't take it to the stealership it wont be too much... and most times when the dealership replaces the whole SC it is just the bearings gone bad....

How many miles do you have on the engine?

 

TPS would likely not have had time audible warning or not. I hit a 3/4 copper tube and lost the tire at about 60 MPH. Same scenario only my "other " Crossfire was right there in Nashville to shuttle me backandforth tothe Auto Zone and get a patch kit.

Now I have two front's and two backs with tires mounted in the garage. Cheaper than a third Crossfire although, if I can buy it right, Hmmmmm.

With so many guys going to after market wheels, just keep watch and a few hundred bucks handy.

Service Rep told me exactly what I've read here on the forum, $6,000 for the NEW SC to replace the one with the bad bearing. Actually got a NEW replacement not a refurbished! Cool!

Car has about 36,000 miles on it.

 

There's a reason why we're built bilaterally symmetrical - 2 of most everything is always better than one !

 

I would find a good used tire to put on the rim. No point spending good money on a new tire that you hope to never use! James

No, I've come to my senses ....besides, when my wife found out where I was headed when the blowout occurred to Fred....she made it clear that Wilma is hers...and she never wants to let her go!!! I suppose that if I was serious at the time I would have been driving Wilma to go see the SRT6. She drove the Chevy to work that day..cause she's affraid someone might key Wilma or something....but till Fred's tire gets replaced...she's driving Wilma & I'm stuck with the Chevy. Basically I just wanted to sucker the salesman into letting me drive the **** out of an SRT6!!! I do that a lot, drove the snot out of 2 MazdaSpeed 3s & 3 Supercharged Cobalts before I found Fred.

Besides, there really is something seriously freaky cool about Wilma's Bright Silver paint.....
